If yours is a 3.0, follow the large rubber hose coming from the radiator (driver side) and going to the engine block. You have to drain the coolant before removing the hose and cover plate (3 bolts, I believe).

Follow the top radiator hose to where it bolts to the block. Drain some off the coolant out of the rad, first. Undo the rad hose from the housing, undo the 3 bolts holding the thermostat housing to the block, take off the housing, and VOILA! There's your thermostat.

sorry guys its a 22re i shuoldve mentioined that but woudlit still be the same?

ahickman 01-10-2009 07:26 PM

In that case.....a4runnerfreak is more accurate. The t-stat on the 22re is nestled in the intake plenum area. Drain some coolant, follow the top hose (passenger side of radiotor) back to the head/intake and unbolt to expose the t-stat.

Follow the big rubber hose from the top pass. side of the rad to the engine. The T-stat is located where the metal pipe the hose goes into makes a 90* turn downwards. That pipe should unbolt, and the t stat will be looking right at you when you remove the pipe.

Just check out 1st pic in my post...might be kinda surrounded by vac lines. I "borrowed" that pic......lol

The T stat is located sitting on that big, gaping hole between #1 and #2 fuel injectors.

ok guys i appreciate yall alot. i knkow what im doin now

nv4runner 01-11-2009 06:10 AM

Glad you found it. On the 3vze it is located where the lower radiator hose clamps to the engine block.

Can't Reach!

Ok guys, I have a 91 4runner, 3.0, with the thermostat on the lower driver side (as mentioned above) but I can't hardly reach the bolts to get the housing off! Any tips/tricks to make my life a little easier on this? Any specific tools that work well?

On 3.slow, Remove Radiator and shroud, Disconnect fanclutch from spindle to remove fan, Remove 3 nuts that hold thermostat housing on.

I gotta question...

Reviving a dead thread!!!
So my buddy has a 3.0 on his 1991(?) pickup. I went over there to help diagnose an overheating problem. He just had a new thermostat installed, and I just got done flushing the radiator, taking off hoses to check for clogs, etc. The coolant was fresh and green, as the oil was black and oily. No white smoke out of the tailpipe. So I ruled out a blown headgasket. Even after the flush and insepection yesterday, its still overheating. I was going to take out the thermostat and reassemble the housing to see if maybe he got a bad thermostat? However I did not have a deep enough socket with me to get the last bolt. So im going over today to help finish the job. However if it turns out NOT to be a faulty thermostat, what else can I look for? I heard someone saying to take the radiator cap off, start it and check to see if the coolant is circulating (water pump still functioning). Ill check that today. As for burping the system, you just let it run with the cap off and front end elevated, right? The radiator has no cool spots, so im assuming there is no clog. However, when he first started noticing it overheat, the tube on the overflow resevoir would leak a good ammount of coolant right around operating temps. Him knowing nothing about cars, proceeded to by radiator stop leak for the following 3-4 weeks. When he realized his leak hadnt stopped (not knowing where it was even coming from) he parked the truck and left it.
What in the world is causing this thing to continuously overheat?!?

Hi welcome. Start a new thread please. You'll get better results.

Best Thermostat for 3VZE

Just wondering what you guys/gals are using these days for thermostats. I've had intermittent cooling issues, and I'm replacing a leaking water pump. I read a bit about 2-stage thermostats, but that seems to be just for the 22RE engine. What is the best thermostat these days and are you still drilling holes in them to help with relieving air pockets?

Thanks!

Ooops, meant to start a new thread. :)

could be a blown head gasket still . Sometimes the "blow" is in the cylinder. Won't mix water in oil. Check for extra moist exhaust.
