Test Drove
 

Drove a 1993 4WD toyota with 200,000 miles today. Just looking for a little mud truck. It had a rebuilt 22re 15,000 miles , 31" pro comps (brand new). Truck road good but pulled to the right a little. Man said it was because of the tires, and that his smaller tires road true. OK. Also, how can I tell if all is well with the 4WD components. Like the transfer case and what not. What else should I be looking for before I pull the trigger. Price is 3000 asking. Body is dinged but not bad. Just concerned about mechanics. Thanks K.

Not sure where you live but if you are in the rust belt, check for that. Tire size does not make your vehicle pull to the right. There is something wrong up front possably an alignment. Does it pull driving or when breaking? If it is breaking then you have a break problem. Your signature name leads me to believe you are a women. Nothing wrong with women, actually I like them allot, just wondering if you have a male friend that could go with you. I am not questioning your knowledge, probably know more about cars then I do. However, the guy might be trying to get over on you because you are women. Just a thought.

wow bad boy you got brass nuts man. yeah Karen I have to agree with him though. sometimes you can get more info from a man if your another man. another out is to ask if you can have a mechanic check it out before you buy. if they say no, walk away

Thanks, but how can I tell if parts are in working order or not that involve the 4WD? I know how to look for leaking signs and what not. But how do you make sure the 4WD is working? Is there a way to test the 4wd, like looking to see if the transfer case is turning the front axle. I know the basics to look for in purchasing a 2WD but the 4WD is new to me. No man here. Thanks K.

to check to see if the 4wd is working shift it into 4wd and try turing in a tight circle it should hop and jump a bit if all is good, as far as pulling a little bit its probably a bad alignment you can have it checked out before buying

assuming that it has manual locking hubs turn the front hub dial thingys then shift into 4 wheel drive, from there make a tight turn and listen for clicking sound coming from the front (before you crank the wheel all the way) and if it clicks is usually means the CV joints arent in the best shape, for leaks, you kinda have to go by you eye and look in the smallest areas. look on the 3rd member/rear axle cause leaks usually appear there quite often, and for the pulling thing, sometimes the trucks pull harder one way or another in 4 wheel drive, i couldnt tell you why though.

do as mentioned above with the 4wd components..

ask for receipts on the rebuild to see what all was done..

might say it was rebuilt..but all he did was blow a headgasket and change the headgasket..

had a guy tell me a motor was rebuilt..and all he freaking did was change the dizzy..plugs..plug wires..coil..air filter..oil..oil filter..and fuel filter..

even my truck pulls to the right heavily at low speeds in 4wd. but yeah. check all the nuts and bolts before purchasing, thats the best you can do :) is it manual hubs or ADDs? you can definitely tell you're in 4wd just by driving, or atleast in my 4runner you can.

Karen, seriously have a mechanic check it out before you buy. it is the only real way to know if your getting a good rig. 4wd is only a small part of the 22re. I have a 86 runner and I have put a few thousand dollars into it, the first 2 grand was spent to get it to go down the road....a mechanic can check it all out and will know whats happening with it and how much it will cost to fix

Also in my 86 if I am in 4wd Hi range it drives the same as 2wd. a mechanic should be able to test everything from hubs to tanny as well as engine components

maybe you can get one of the guy's here to go up with you for a beer if you are close to someone , driving up in a yota with a guy will make this guy take notice that you have someone with that knows his stuff about yotas , better yet if its a 90-95 built truck then he knows he is in for a knowledgeable dual with someone that maybe knows more then he does and will offer up the true issues with it.

I'm sure theres one or two guy's here that would be more then willing to help you out with this deal , If you are in or near So.Maryland I will gladly ride up with you and lend a hand and my knowledge to you for near nothing ( Arizona Sweet tea or Arnold Palmer) just would hate to see someone get hosed and then think all yotas are junk and there owners are asshats or worse.

Look for any obvious leaks.

Check for driveline play and so on.

You can put it in 4wd, and go try to turn, you will feel the resistance of the driveline trying to keep you going straight. Don't do it on dry pavement. I would be pissed of somebody came to look at my rig and did that...
