tchain cover installation gasket sealer q'stion

G'day,

so I put a brand new tchain cover on last night and used permatex ultrablack on both sides of the new tchain gaskets.

got 4 bolts on finger tight and remembered that I forgot to take the tape off the tensioner. so I undid the bolts, backed the cover off, broke the tape and reinstalled the cover.

today I got reading the ultra black label again and it seems to emphasize immediate installation of components after application of the ultra black.

You figure it may be OK or should I pull the chain cover, scrape it down again and reinstall with permatex red?

What do you think? it's on now and tchain cover bolts have been torqued for 24 hours.

Thanks,

Pete

was it still gooey? usually RTV will be fine as long as it isn't already dried.

and in the future, use ultra gray. works like magic on our engines, and is a direct cross reference for the factory sealant.

I agree with Kyle. Some guys will even let the RTV get a little tacky before the install.

yup

ya it was still sticky.

I was using ultra black, then the dude at the parts shop told me yesterday I sbhould be using the red stuff but you figure it would be worth my while to throw those tubes out and go exclusively with ultra grey?

One thing I wondered is that none of these products are usable on head gaskets, so he sold me this spray on copper stuff that he said to put all over the head gasket. I had the head planed, and block is nice.

any other head gasket sealants used by you guys?

Pete

i don't recommend spraying anything on the head gasket -- better gaskets for the 22R-E(toyota oem, engnbldr) have a rubbery coating on the top side anyway.

the only silicone i buy any more is ultra gray, and ultra copper. i use the ultra gray for everything(water pumps, timing chain gaskets, valve covers, oil pan, diffs) and ultra copper on exhaust gaskets if i think i need a little extra help.
