As mentioned above in question form --- vice grip locking chain pliers -- i had to use this method tonight --- they work very well and are much cheaper than the rigid unit

Bang on the end of the bolt with your hammer. hit it like you mean it.
Next, 1 inch impact wrench. (rent one) how high does you compressor go? overlook the 90PSI rating on the rental tool and give it all you have. She'll come loose.

I have not tried it yet because I do not own one. I am going to try and find one tomorrow and if I can't, or if they are too expensive, then I am going to build a holding tool similar to the one in the FSM using some 1/2 inch scrap metal that I have.
I would try that, but I don't have an air compressor.

CrankShaft Pulley Bolt
I had to take mine off to, to change the Timing chain. I tried the breaker bar method to but I didn't have any hope with that all it did was round the head of the bolt off. I got the socket that would fix it and welded it on and got my breaker bar on it and came right off. Lost a socket but got it off.:bigclap:

Mines stuck.. really really stuck, my Impact gun wont do it(its never ever struggled on a bolt), breaker bar is a bit scary afraid of wrecking something or rounding the head on the bolt. Im thinking the next step is to heat it up and go ape with the impact gun again but im not sure, I need to get at the front seal because its spraying oil while its running, I just hope the bolt doesn't snap.

Try using the chain wrench that was mentioned above. That is how I got my bolt off. I put 6 point socket on a breaker bar which was set on the frame and turned the pulley with a chain wrench. I put a big pipe on the end of it for more leverage and it worked well. I bought a cheap chain wrench at Harbor Freight and it did not break. If the bolt snaps, then you will most likely be able to unscrew it out of the crankshaft since the tension will be off of it.

Hmm.. I have this stupid Mastercraft strap wrench thing, maybe il give that a try, basically its the same principal as a chain wrench but instead of a chain it has a rubber strap.

^ yeah I know better, ive stripped so many bolts using wrong sockets (metric/standard/six point etc..) made sure I used the right one this time.
It finally came out! Someone siliconed it in, I used a different breaker bar, 2ft of tube on the end, put the truck in 5th and 4low, put a cinder block behind the tire and gave it ▓▓▓▓.. I sprayed some "Move it" on it last night so maybe that helped, I tried using my strap wrench on the pulley but it couldnt grab it good enough.

I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a tool to use one time so I came up with a solution for under $5. I bought 10 feet of 1/8" wire rope $3.20 and a pack of cable clamps .97 from home depot. Secure one end of the wire rope to the frame with the clamps. wrap the other end around the pulley 5 or 6 times. make sure the free end is on the bottom. This will cause the rest of the cable to bite down on itself. I then used a breaker bar and some pipe to loosen the bolt. Worked like a charm.

How are you going to put the bolt back in? You're going to need to hit 181 ft-lbs (a little less on a 22re), so there is no way to avoid making a tool to keep the crank from turning. So my preference was to avoid all the "excitement" of running the starter with tools attached, and just think ahead.

There are others on this site, just avoid the ones that will obviously damage your truck. I think a chain-wrench around the crank pulley is just asking for it; I would worry about dragging steel cable around a v-belt pulley. Cutting up an old timing belt and screwing it to a 2x4 is another cheap way. I just prefer a (cheap) tool that bolts on and just works.

I broke my matco pull bar when i tried the chain wrench on frame idea, ended up pulling radiator so i could get 1300ft lb impact on it. when it was time for my 4runner to get timing chain I was looking at 1" pull bar on tool truck when I seen this. bought it and it worked like a champ. Mine looks a little diffient but same part number. I use it all the time not just crank bolts.

My neighbor has a R22 that some student mechanic tried to get the crank bolt off for 2 days. He finally rounded the bolt off and things looked bad.
Finally the neighbor found someone how came out with a large chisel and a heavy hammer. The chisel was ground flat on one side like a wood chisel so it would dig in. He first made a notch on the outside of the bolt flange with the chisel. Then he hammered the chisel upward to loosen the bolt. It spun loose in 5 hits. After dicking around for 2 days it was a thing of beauty.
