Standard Cab Short Bed 4x2 vs 4x4 Fuel Tank Swap?
I'm researching swapping over from a 22R to 22RE. I'm about to buy a salvaged 4x4 short bed standard cab 22RE truck. I understand that the tanks have to be swapped for in tank vs out of tank fuel pump (and anti starve pump design). However I've noticed looking at brochures that while my 2wd standard cab short bed RN80 has a 13.7 gallon tank the RN101 4wd standard cab short bed had a 17.2 gallon tank? Will I be able to swap in the 17.2? I could see a difference in a long bed design or xtra cab, but essentially aren't these the same frame with a different suspension/transmission? I can't find where someone has commented on any forum why this swap would or wouldn't work. What could be in the way under there? From pictures online the tank is a little longer but no wider.

The bigger tank will hang down lower too

But will it fit?

Since I never saw a 2wd truck up close and personal .
Measure your truck the clearance you have side to side front to back. Cross members that support the tank distance Can you fabricate and move things as needed ?? hard to measure something you don`t have in front of you Is the fuel fill the same spot on both beds ?? This would seem to be most important unless you want to install a new fuel fill location every thing else can be adjusted What tank is called for in the 22re application for your truck. Why not go with a outside the tank electric pump of the proper pressure and flow rate ?? Then some new lines and filter your good to go. |
The 4x4 tank is about 10" longer. There is a different crossmember location on the 2wd frame as opposed to the 4wd.
Check out out my thread "build for a buddy" in the 84-85 section. I have some pictures on this. |
