stalling after intake install
 

1989 v6 5spd 4x4 base, I put on a new eBay intake on, piping-cone filter, not a lot to it. It did not have a place to hook up the large rubber hose that comes from the front if the engine(went to the top of the old airbox) so I blocked it off for now, don't know what it is or if it could be left open but my truck has stalled twice now and stumbled when starting on 2 other occasions.
Otherwise it runs fine, any suggestions?

The larger of the two is for pulsed air injection system which would be fine to cap if you also pulled the vacuum line on the valve itself too. You might provide a link to what you bought. You must retain the VAFM (van air flow meter) in the intake system. If you bypassed that too, then there's your problem.

I did not bypass the vafm. I am well aware of its purpose. but it did act as though it was unplugged after it stalled, but I checked and it was still plugged in.

Picks of the new installed intake, might help to see if something looks wrong!

clamps all secure? if air gets in the air flow meter cant adjust the fuel correctly.

Did you remove the wire to the VAFM at all? If you removed the SCREWS holding in on, you probably FUBAR'd the VAFM.

Check to make sure connections so the VAFM are good. What you are describing is a VAFM or intake leak issue.

I'll never understand why everyone thinks they need to replace the intake. This engine works fine with it stock. If not, there are other issues that need to be addressed. You just created a problem where you didn't have one before~

Yes it does seem to be a vafm problem, that is where I started my troubleshooting, but it is plugged in and the clamps are all tight.

I installed the cold air intake hoping for the same gains that I have gotten in the past on other vehicles.

Have you tried going back to stock and see if it runs?

Start by checking for air leaks, making sure the AFM wiring is good and secure, then test the AFM per the service manual specs.

If you want to check for vacuum leaks, grab a can of carb cleaner (keep it away from your battery and don't spray in front of the AFM!) and shoot little bursts at the piping and couplers. If/when your idle raises, you've found your vacuum leak.

I am going to try puting the stock air box back on, and I will also try the carb cleaner trick to check for leaks as well.
