Speedomter cable oiling
 

I know this has been covered many times but I couldnt find the answer to my question.

I tried to oil my speedo cable yesterday but could not figure out how to get oil into the cable.

Its got a plastic end that connects the cable to the guage cluster and I dont know how to either take that off or somehow get oil into the cable.

Anyone thats oiled one of these please help!

I tried to oil mine, it worked for about 3 weeks, and got noisy again. I couldnt really get oil past the fittings, but I figured out the way to do it after I paid someone to build a new one.
You need to make a grease gun fitting that uses either end of the cable's fittings. A little creative plumbing should do it.

Im not following you. I couldnt see any way to get any oil/grease past the end of the cable.

You just fill up the connector and let it go down into the cable???

did one today.. unscrew cable housing from the transfer box (gear box ), now pull inner cable out, fill cable housing using an oil can & reassemble
( it is not nessary to remove guage cluster, cause the inner cable can only be remove from bottom end ) raj

A lot of them will not allow you to remove the cable from the sheath. I like the idea of filling one end up and letting it drain down in. I hadnt tried that.

I was thinking that you could get a threaded pipe fitting that would match the tranny side of the cable and use other fittings with a grease zerk as a final connector. Then, you could pump grease into the sheath past the irritating ring that prevents removing the cable and squirting litium grease into the tube.
The only thing I could get int the sheath was graphite, and not enough to help.

someone correct me if im wrong but arnt you suposed to use graphite to lube your spedo cable?

Take a look on the end of the cable that attaches to the cluster. There's a rubber bushing inside that you can pry out that will free up a good deal of space to squirt/squeeze some sort of lube in there. I used white grease on a hot day and then drove it for a few miles after hooking it back up. No more noise, no more bounce.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Im gonna try again this weekend. Hopefully this time it'll work.

There is stuff out there called "Dryslide" it is commonly used to lube clutch cables on motorcycles. It works really well.
