Hello folks, I am new to this forum, if this exact issue sounds like something that already exists on this forum, please guide me there.

I recently got a '90 22re 4runner with 350k km, fixed up a huge exhaust leak, and started noticing a noise.
This noise sounds a fair bit like a loose dry bicycle chain, it makes noise specifically when my rpm is in the 2700-3000 range, often when I engine brake, and also when I push in the clutch to gear up or down (I suppose when the RPM crosses the 2.7k-3k range). This sound happens regardless of whether or not the engine is cold/warm. The sound isn't extremely loud, but certainly catches my attention.

My first logical thought is that this is the timing chain on its way out, whether it has stretched over its lifetime, or maybe the tensioner is also involved.

The previous owner told me that one of the belts snapped when he had it and got it replaced, a buddy of mine suggested that the sound could potentially be a bearing if the previous owner didn't replace those when the belt went.

Any ideas on what the sound could be, if my guess is correct, and if it is reasonably achievable to fix this myself or with a buddy?
