I have a 95 4Runner with a 3.0 and I just started smelling fuel inside my truck yesterday and haven't had a chance to look at it. I was going to put it in my garage tomorrow and check my fuel lines, intake, exhaust, and fuel injectors. I haven't noticed a big drop in gas milage though I've only gone about 30 miles since the first sign of the problem. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone have any other ideas where to check?

 

I had a fuel smell inside my truck that was strong when the heater was pulling outside air... and especially strong with the hood popped (coming from under the plenum).
I recently have put new HG on it, so I figured I didnt seat one of the injectors correctly or I forgot to tighten a bolt. It turns out that one of my injectors' O-rings had the smallest nick in it...we're talking tiny, but that was where the fuel was leaking from.
I would say let your truck run till you can smell the fuel, then shut it off and listen to hear if you can hear the fuel system leaking from any part of the fuel rail or injectors. I had to pull the plenum on mine... I hope you have better luck and dont have to. What a pain.

 

If you smell fuel, I would try to fix it out side if you can. Fuel vapor is realy explosive in a confined area such as your garage, not to mention if your vehicle caught on fire in your garage. Hope you find the leak soon.

 

I had a problem last summer with my gas tank. I could smell gas bad while I was driving. Turns out the metal line coming from the top of the tank had rusted through and was spraying gas. I replaced that line with a rubber fuel line hose and seems to have fixed it.

I had this problem in my old yota and it turned out to be the fuel pulsation dampener. It's a pretty easy fix, you take off the plenum and it's under there. Maybe a 2-3 hour fix for a novice mechanic like myself. The part cost me $200 from the dealer though... ouch. If I remember correctly, after the truck has been driven, go under the hood and listen for a dripping sound coming from the driver side behind the air-intake manifold, if you hear dripping, it might be the fuel pulsation dampener, the dripping is the fuel.

BTW: I would be willing the pull the one out of my old truck and sell it to you, it's essentially brand new. My old truck is rotting away in my backyard.

 

Last summer I had fuel ordors coming from the engine as well.
Turned out to be a corroded/rotten fuel return line. Easy to replace.
