So.....my power steering hose (1 of them) cracked the other day on my 1987 22RE and I got to thinking it's a good time to replace my vacuum hoses altogether.

I really liked 4crawler's red silicone hose setup:









He used "RS Akimoto" kit from Summit Racing, which I can't seem to find..."Mr. Gasket 11031R" is the closest match I could find, and comes in the lengths that 4crawler used:

"about 10 feet of 3mm, and a few feet of 6mm and 10mm"

However, it's hard to find them in the red color - most places carry them in yellow or green.

This is the ONLY place online I could find this kit in red.

I think I'd need a little extra, plus I may want to use on my Datsun as well - 2 kits would be what I'd get.

My questions to you guys are:

• Is $64 for 2 of these sets a good deal, or am I wasting money?
• Is there a better place to get this stuff - maybe wholesale?
• Does anyone know the stock size of the vacuum hoses on the 22RE?
• Are there good replacements for the larger hoses, like the PCV hose out there, at a decent price?

Looks like they have the 3mm and 6mm for about $1 or $1.50 a foot and the 10mm stuff is $3-$5. They have red too.

Have you had a chance to use the McMaster car product? 70A durometer is "Soft," and the maximum pressure is 5psi. How does it handle vacuum? (up to -10psi or so). The wall thickness on the 3mm is 2.5mm (which "sounds" like vacuum tube), but on the 6mm it's only 1.5mm.

 

I noticed that too - none of them were "vacuum rated".

They are about 60 Shore A hardness. If you look at the chart on their website that looks about like tire tread. To me that still seems pretty hard...

Not sure about the vacuum rating. I think if something is "vacuum rated" it means it will hold up under full vacuum. I don't know if engines operate close to full vacuum or not.

 

interesting stuff........looking to probably do this later but curious about the info.

 

Personally I am more interested in an expensive silicone rubber material for coolant hoses. Plain old automotive vacuum tubing is fine for me

We have not bought any of the hose yet. On the list, just have not made it that far down.

As far as diameters and lengths. 4Crawler states, 3mm,6mm, and 10mm and the lengths he purchased. Stylin Motors sells 3.5mm, 6mm, and 10mm.

To convert the fraction from a tape measure to a metric size, convert the fraction to a decimal, multiply the decimal by 25.4 (25.4 mm in an inch) = mm.

IE:
1/4" = .25 inches
.25 inch x 25.4 = 6.35 millimeters
I would use a 6mm hose.

OK guys, I went ahead and placed an order with "Stylin' Motors" for the vacuum hoses I need. I did some measuring today in my engine bay and came up with these needs (wiper fluid was not a must have but I figured what the hell....):

4mm: 17 ft
6mm: 6 ft
8mm: 3 ft
10mm: 1 ft



I looked at the kits they had but they didn't fully cover what I needed, and had excess of what I didn't. So my order was a little more expensive than one of their kits, but I feel like it will cover what I need.

Total, with ground shipping (and no tax!) was: $54.51.

I will let you guys know how the install goes, and post up photos of it of course!

 

Please do i just purchase some online as well on ebay and waiting for it to ship to my house.

Yes i know theres duct tape on my air tube. The car is not running trying to get everything done with it.

 

Do they have the silicone tubing available in black?

 

I couldn't find any. The blue is too blue and the red is too red, but i guess it gives you a little "rice" look. Its ok NGK's are blue and my big 3 upgrade are blue too.

 

Hey guys - been a while since I got the red hoses from Stylin' Motors, and I finally got around to installing them tonight.

Side note - they do come in black/blue/red from Stylin' Motors, so you can go "OEM look" with them.


The only real drawback I see is that some of the hoses are too narrow for the OEM hose clips - but...they are snug enough on their own that I don't think it's going to be an issue.

I'll probably get the OEM hoses (2) that come out of the valve cover, as I can't get a perfect seal on the PCV valve, and I could not find another size from Stylin' Motors to replace the other hose toward the front of the engine.
