hes talking about the shifter plate taht bolts to the top of the trans. The bushing/seal in the top of that always wears out and breaks apart. You gotta get it at the dealership. If its a carbed truck, it will have 4 bolts holding it down...6 bolts if its EFI

btw you dont have to remove that plate to replace the shifter seat bushing. It will come out the top.

well im not in Philly, so me calling doesn't make sense lol.

If you want, pm me and i willsend you my phone #. Or find me on AIM DeathCougar or yahoo IM Sync14@yahoo.com

Sounds to me like you have answered your own questions tho. The only places you can get these parts are the dealership anyways.

You will need the following parts, from what I can ascertain:
Shift tower bushing
Shifter bushing
Tower gasket
Shifter retainer
Shifter retainer spring

btw the shifter bushing itself is a white nylon bushing that attaches to the end of the shifter, and cushions between the shifter, and the hole in the trans where the shifter plugs into.

ok more problems.....

my transmission did not have the collar that you push and twist...it has a plate with 4 bolts that holds the stick in.....the plate is rotted and no good....under the plate was a spring and some sort of washer.....

my shifter doesnt look like this http://www.brian894x4.com/Shifter.html

on my firewall it says w46....but my friend looked at the transmissions on marlincrawler and said my transmission looks identical to a w56....he said its the exact same lookin tranny so this is confuseing me!

does anybody have a shifter assembly up for grabs for my transmission...and can anybody point me in the right direction?

this is the tranny he said it looks like... http://www.marlincrawler.com/images/2wd_w56_500.jpg

keep in mind this is for a 2wd truck

that is a W46 trans for sure, the bolt down style. You will need to find the shifter assy that was used on the W series trannys. That should be pretty easy to find. That collar will NOT just slide off, for sure.

Also try posting in the wanted section, or talking to WabFab, im sure he could help you out.

My '88 has the W46 transmission, and I just replaced the shifter bushing the other week - a few pictures at https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116/acess-so-i-can-remove-shifter-110131/

There are 4 bolts that hold the shifter in, no need to push in an twist to get it out. When I pulled the vinyl floor covering, everything under and around the shifter was pretty clean - not really disintegrating. You need the red W55 shifter seat bushing from Marlin

You might want to try asking on the Marlin forum for any parts you need, since they're in the business of rebuilding the transmissions. See http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php and scroll down to the specific forum

I second that. That part is great - better quality than the Toyota one. You can also take your VIN to the Toyota dealer and they will give u the exact printout of your shifter take-apart - that's how I figured it out. There are a couple models, so it helps to give them ur VIN and get the EXACT diagram. Mine was different than the "turn CCW and pull" model.

NOTE: the shifter seat is NOT on the diagram. I was told by the dealer you had to order the complete metal top seat to get the rubber seat, so I would just get the Marlin one...

I recommend getting the printout, taking the shifter assembly out, and seeing what parts you need - then go back and order. Also, when you remove the shifter, watch out for the disintegrated nylon seat - if that falls in ur tranny its no good. Took me about 15 min with a tweezer (with a string tied on it so I couldn't drop that in too) to get it all cleaned up.

Good luck.

well my truck is fixed! i had to get a whole new shifter kit from toyota which ran me $145.....but there was one more problem...in the hole where the end of the actual shifter with the bushing on the ball fits into there is a bushing in there also which was gone....found it in the bottom of the tranny....toyota said there wasnt one in the country so they had to order one from japan so we scraped that idea....turned a piece of brass on the laith and made our own and it works fine!

gotta say what a huge difference in this thing....it had problems with the shifter the day i bought it over 2 years ago....so this is the first time i actually felt a tight shifter stick in this truck!

my clutch actually wore a pocket so to speak int he flywheel so we slaped that up on the cnc milling machine and basicly re contoured the whole flywheel....when the trans was pulled there was a locating dowel pin missing so we made another one on the laith.

thanks for yalls help!!!!
