Serious oil leak right after oil change
 

I did an oil change on the weekend. I ran it for a couple of minutes afterwards and there were no problems.

I was running it later on in the day, just idling in the driveway and noticed a lot of oil on the ground. It was a steady drip. I shut her off and the leak stopped.

The oil is not coming from the filter or drain plug, I checked and it only leaks when running. The leak seems to be coming from higher up above the drain plug but I can see exactly where from.

After spending a bunch on having the head gasket done I'm afraid to take it back to the shop.

Can you shoot out some ideas as to possible faults.

Maybe the oil cooler?

wipe off the oil and have someone start your truck while you look underneath with a flashlight for the leak, if its near the drain plug I would look around the oil pan gasket and check around the filter again.

When my leaked, she leaked pretty good. The drips would run from the cooler down the stiffner plate bracket, and then down the oil pan near the drain plug.

well considering it's only leaking when then truck's running, I don't think it's the oil pan or drain plug simply because the oil pan isn't subjected to oil preassure. I would take another look at the oil filter and make sure that A) it's seated down good with the gasket on the bottom of it; if it springs a leak, it could very easily spray off to the side and make the leak look like it's coming from somewhere else, and B) make sure there's now pin-point sized holes in the filter itslef. I know it's a new filter, but still, I've seen it happen more than once.

You have to remember, oil it constantly under a good amount of pressure while the trucks running, so when a leak is sprung from a spot that's under pressure, it's not always going to simply drip at the point of the leak; it's going to spray all over the place...

Just pull the filter back off and check over it. And also, make sure that the gasket from your old filter you took off during the oil change it's still on the block; sometimes they can stick on there.

If the filter looks fine, then rub some oil around the gasket, thread her back onto the block, and tighten her down and see what happens; it may just not be seated right so that might solve your problem.


I seen plently of oil filter leaks after working at a Jiffy Lube for 1 1/2 years...

x2 I would check the filter. You could of possibly left the old asket on there,and have a double gaket. That will leak or it can blow the gasket out.

X3. I've seen that happen a couple of times. It would make sense since the leak occured following the oil change. However, when it happened to me, the leak was instantaneous and it made a huge mess!

OK, so today I spun on a new filter. I made sure the old gasket wasn't left behind and wiped down the area where the gasket seats to.

Wiped down everything and started her up. After about a minute, dripping started again. About 1 drip per second. I is definately coming from above the oil pan. Its just strange that it coincided with the oil change. I took a picture of it.

To me, it looks like it is coming from the part circled. What is that part? Or, it could be coming from somewhere else and just be dripping down. Had a good look and I could tell anything else from any other angles.

Just looking at the amount of caked-on oily dirt around the leak area, it appears that your leak has been going on for a while. Maybe it just suddenly got worse. Don't know what engine you have, but check your valve cover gasket(s)--a leak there can ooze oil down the side of your engine.

Had the head gasket done about a month ago. I didn't notice any spots on the driveway.

Just went out and checked, cant see anything coming from the valve cover. It coming from up inside where I just cant get my eyeball on it.

I think I have to submit and take it to the shop.

did you change oil viscosities (spelling) maybe?

Just wanted to update this thread for anyone searching in the future.

I ended up taking it in. The mechanic found it right away. It was the filter adapter seal. The adapter goes between the block and the filter. It was a $9 part and one hour of labour.
