Ruptured brake line.
 

So after replacing the shoes on my rear brakes and having nice tight brakes for about 2 minutes, a line broke somewhere over the gas tank. I've searched and found that the pre-bent lines from the dealer are probably the way to go. Just wondering if this is a driveway mechanic job, or if I should get a real mechanic to install the lines ( I am going to replace both lines at once)

Nothing to it, but I imagine you'll have to drop the gas tank to get to them...you already got lines where the new ones go so it is a simple r/r.

I just finished replacing both the brake and fuel lines due to rust and leaking... It'll take the better part of a weekend to do, but easy enough to do.

You'll have to drop the gas tank for sure. Also when I did mine, I unbolted the body mounts and raised the passenger side body about 5-6" and it was much easier to get to bolts and move the lines around. The hardest part will be removing the fuel filter and mount as they route the brake lines behind it.

I just re routed my new brake lines to the back where it was easier to keep an eye on them and out of the way/safe. they dont have to run where the factory ran them.
mine burst right over the gas tank too.... they must rot up there.

My wrenching skills are limited to like 'hand tools' level. This past weekend I had to replace some brake line. Thought about taking it in...no flare tool. Just get an aprox. length of 3/16 brake line pre-fitted with the right fittings. Allyia has the best advice...they can go where you want them to, just be carefull bending the tubeing. Probably best to rent a small tube flaring tool for the weekend.

dropping the gas tank is straight forward. There may be a write-up for it.

PS: Don't forget to bleed when finished. That step was so easy my 7 yr old helped out.

My brake line just ruptured above the gas tank this afternoon and I'm going to replace it myself. Just wondering if anyone has any idea of the length of brake line that I need? Also if you know the pre-fitted end sizes, that would be great too. I have a 1994 V6 5 speed 4 Runner. Thank you in advance for your help.

You could try the dealer for the pre-fitted size, but all the dealer tech does is this...they buy the smallest stock brake line...about $2.50 it comes with the correct fittings installed. Then they get any length of 3/16 brake line and bend it to fit the route, adding the fittings they took off the small brake line. Pretty cheap solution, but be careful with the bending. And if one line has already ruptured look at the others...it may be easier to do them all at once.

Brake lines, metric or standard, bubble or double?
 

Since mine blew today I was wondering if the brake lines on the axle are metric or standard and the line going front to rear if that is metric or standard. Also any bubble flares or double flares? What I mean by metric or standard is the threads on the line. I need to know this since I will be doing it on my back. I have replaced the lines front to rear before in other Toyota trucks but for the life of me I cant remember anything! Help! :help:

Know how much line you need lengthwise including the bends etc. Go to your local auto parts place and get 3/16" brake line w/ metric fittings on each end. I had a combination since I put in a manual proportioning valve, but I also just bought the line and flared my own fittings on. They are double flared FYI. For bends, just use a piece of pipe or something and don't try to turn them too tight and you'll be fine.

That's why the techs just buy the small line...it comes with two standard toyota fittings, for less than the cost of two fittings. They fab up the new line to suit.For less than the cost of the fitted part. Then charge for the fitted part.
