Run Away RPM
 

I was driving along today minding my own business and all of a sudden my accelerator pedal began to stick and not depress or retract. Eager to get where I was going I smashed it to the floor it didnt retract at all. The rpm's took off and nearly hit the rev limiter. I quickly killed the engine with the key and pulled over.
I popped the hood and played with the throttle a bit to free it up. Its not very smooth and is in fact pretty rough moving.

The throttle has been sticking on me a bit the last week or so too.

At first I thought it was bad o-rings from when I cleaned out the TB with carb cleaner but that seems un likely. 2nd I thought the spring was sticking. Or 3rd might I have my throttle cable too tight?

I just replaced the engine and cleaned the throttle body on my 3.0. last week instaled the new tps. which i had trouble going for some reason.

Yikes. Is it the TB or the cable?

dont know for sure. I was wierd and kind un nerving. I first figured that it was the return spring. Im thinking that tomorow that I will loosen the TB cable first ans see how it goes.

Wd40? As they say in jail; a little lube goes a long way.

Not always matt. Dirt sticks to lube. Do they say that in jail too?? yuck, to far....................

If you have an automatic its probably the kick down cable sticking. Have had one do that years ago. Somehow the inside of the cable started rusting. I put some penetrating oil down the cable and that was the end of the problem.

I hit it with some pb last night. I think the lube will help more then hinder in this case :hillbill:

sorry I have a stick. If it sticks again I will remove the cable and hit it with some wd40 and re adjust it.

Try graphite lube actually, it won't cause dirt to stick like Flash391 said.

Check your ground connections.
The throttle cable is a steel wire that is connected from the engine to the pedal. All grounded,and when a bad connection is somewhere else, the next best path is found(cable) which is not intended as such. It heats up and starts melting the plastic around the cable itself(sticky throttle). Even add one or two other grounds.
