Most all 4runners first and sec gen have a 17gal tank correct. Lets say ur getting 15 mpg. thats about 255 miles to a tank. soo it is possible. i dunno how but it is. Urs is automatic and will get a few less miles to the gallon than a 5-speed. so... yea

i think the 1st and 2nd gens have a 14 gallon tank. if not my tank is much more dented than i thought it was

I find as soon as you go over 3100-3200rpm or so your mileage drops.

dutchboy does have a good point on his threads. every post about gas mileage on this whole website says that everyone is getting y gas mileage in there runners. non hardley above 200 miles per tank. im wondering if there are mods to fix this becasue like EVERYONE else mine is also slow and bad on gas mileage.

as you will learn this is normal and very typical of the 3vz. But there are others that are not claiming that swaping supra 7mge afm parts and increase mpgs a little bit. about 1 or 2 mpg As for power the 3.0 is what it is. at most you can maybe get 15 more hp but the cost of all the components need isnt worth it compared to an engine swap

oh man... gas mileage is such a tough topic.... lol dutchboy it was kinda fun talking funny picked out something is said i didn't even realize it till now lol. wow lol. yea first and sec gens 17gals. all our trucks are differnent i guess. I supose if your truck was running richer than others the gasmileage would go down... or if yours was running leaner it would get a little better gasmialge but not be too good for the engine....

The best mod you can do? Modify your driving habits. Easy on the gas,keep the rpm's outta the red light district,travel lightly and accept what you have. This is my solution. Yes...what Kiroshi says is great too...a fine tuned engine. Keep filters clean and the best tune up you can get on her!
You'll notice that the people that are modding are the ones that have engines that don't last too long. The only mod Kiroshi mentioned,was BIGGER TIRES!
Not gonna get better MPTank that way.

Anti mod here! ( I know,I have a Ranger that is heavily modded and it gets 7mpg!!!).

Here in AZ where the speed limit is 75, your already over 3000rpm if you going the speed limit. Has nothing to do with keeping your foot out of it. I know that mashing it in town gives you crappy mileage in any vehicle (for the most part). The 3.0 V6 vehicle was built when speed limits were 55, that's all I was trying to say. I custom build custom bikes, drag cars, 4X's and hot rods and I've drivien over 1.1 million miles in my life so far, so I think I understand the concept of how HP to use to mileage works.

Easy James Dean. Maybe next time I need to yet,go further into detail and aim my suggestions at those of us who live in states with lower speed limits. Don't die on us now...wait...you're already dead..hmpf.

If you are filling your tank up on empty frequently...then you will be replacing your fuel pump.
I do have a question and it's mainly because I don't live in a state that has higher speed limits.
But...you're 75mph "speed limit"...does that mean that you "have to" drive that fast?
I know here in Pa,the max speed limit is 65,but most do not do that. for whatever reason,i have no clue.

In AZ where there are 8-10 lane freeways, 75mph is considered "reasonable and prudent". Also there can be more than 100 miles between cities.

I've been in Penn and I wouldn't want to drive 65 there either. Had an 6-point buck jump off an embankment and went thru the pass side of the windshield when I was 22.

I'll help with the confusion. My 88 4Runner has 3.0L, auto, 4.10 gears, 17.2 gallon tank according to the manual. Mods are 30 x 9.5 x 15 (28's are stock???) and a 1" body lift. Most of my tank is gone and if I fill it, I may take 13 to 15 gallons. 157 is on the trip meter. It is mostly city, 90 + %, and I'm kinda heavy on the skinny pedal cuz it's so slow and all. I believe cruising speed of 70 MPH will give me 2200 RPM's with these tires.

Yes, 11 to 13 around town. Need to take a trip out of town to get a feel for highway MPG.

I am about to pull the trigger on a 5 speed swap, so I am gonna document all my miles and gallons till it's in to compare.

I got a 91 p/u on 33's, 4.10's 5spd, 3inch bl, 232k miles. I run about 330mi per tank w the 33's avg speed on highway 70mph(62 according to speedo) rpm= 2400. With 31's at 70 miles per hour (about 65 on speedo) I get 300 mi per tank, rpm=2800..... with 225's (stock tire size) I get 275 mi per tank, 70mph, rpm= 3100..... which do you think would net better mpg on the highway at constant speed??? Lower rpms = better mpg, provided it's not all steep hills.

In town.... a bit different, I get way better mpg w the 225's, because the engine dont have to work as hard to get me to the brakes to do it all over again......

Ok,some of this is starting to mathmatically sit in my noggin for some resolution.
I'm starting to understand why the 5 speeds are better for fuel consumption. More direct power,where as the torque converter of the auto's acts more as a "stall" converter. Using more gas till the tranny gears actually start to move the vehicle.
Also...taller tires actually makes sense now that I think about it. (as long as they are not exremly wide).

...DAMN!!! You got lucky...very lucky. Good to see that you survived that buck hit. I took a hit from a buck,a few years ago in my lifted(too damn high) Ranger. Slammed my driver front wheel.

I thought Montana was the only state to have "reasonable and prudent" speed limits?
