Rough idle, white smoke, clean oil, losing water, and gas like smell from radiator???

Ok, I have a mystery here. My brother in law's 95 3.slow is acting wierd. As of now, no cel. Start the runner and it has a very rough idle and dies. Some white smoke from the tail pipe, not heavy just light. Loses water, and a gas like smell from the radiator. The oils is clean, no sign of water. Is it possible for water and gas to mix in the intake manifold or anywhere else. Have not been able to do a compression test yet, but will try this week. Is it still possible to have a blown head gasket and not have water and oil mixing on the dip stick?

Can you say BLOWN HEAD GASKET?!? Head gasket doesn't necessarily mean oil/coolant mix; depends on where it blows. But it definitely sounds blown. Compression test first. Coolant system leakdown test second while plugs are still out from compression test, then if coolant is indeed leaking out somewhere, turn over engine & look for the cylinder blowing water out. You can get a nice coolant tester & compression tester for about $110 total from Sears.

You've got problems...pull the heads, probably time for a complete top-end overhaul.

that sounds like a hg to me, and with the 3.0 its not too unusual

typical 3.blow. not all do it, but most do.. good luck

Thanks all, I always assumed a bhg meant oil and water mix. Does anyone have or seen a write up on replacing the hg on a 3.slow?

OMG! There are at least a hundred threads on this; get a new one every month! Go to advance search, type in blown head gasket and search away! The FSM link at the top of this forum is ESPECIALLY helpful...
good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I must be missing something because I can't find the FSM link.

Not neccessarily. On my 22RE I had a blown headgasket but it was leaking down the side of the block near the #4 cylinder. I didn't have mixing going on, but was loosing coolant at an alarming rate. I finally figured out what was causing it when I heard a hissing noise when I stopped driving one day and traced the noise to where the head meets the block and could see bubbles.
