Greeting gents,

I was hoping to unveil my latest purchase with an intro thread, but I have been struggling to get the engine to run correctly.

It is a 1987 4Runner, 22re with 5-speed. Has approx 223,000 miles. Does not appear to be using oil, no water loss.

Drove it home, and did notice a few issues.

When the engine is started and is cold, engine purrs. As it warms up, the idle becomes rougher. When driving it in this condition, you have to almost "over rev" the engine to start froma dead stop. Once going, it feels like there is not much power, then at 3,000 rpms, the truck takes off like a rocket. Runs very well as long as the rpm's are above 3000. ???

So, I did the basic checks-diagnostics. replaced the plugs, distributor cap, rotor. As discovered the coil was bad - replaced. Check the spark plug & coil wires - Good. All fuses good. No check engine light.

Last night, took it for a little drive. After about 15 minutes of driving, the engine starting getting sluggish, no response - almost wanting to die. Symptoms started getting worse and I finally had to push it home the last 300 yards. That thing is heavy!

Got frustrated last night and decided to do some more reading in the FSM, but also thought I would ask all of you experts for advice as to which direction to go. EFI, TPS, AFM, O2, another senso??? Troubles me that is gets worse as it warms up. A temperature sensor??

Any and alla dvice will be welcomed.

Could be any of the last 4 you mentioned and can be ruled out with a volt/ohm meter.

I wouod start with the TPS and 02 sensor

I like the free and easy stuff first, so I would...

1. Check for vacuum leaks, especially around anything that is connected to one of the temperature vacuum fittings which only open when warm (since you have trouble when warm).
2. Adjust the valves
3. Set the idle, and check/adjust the timing.

If it still doesn't run well, then check that the TPS is adjusted, if not adjust that sucker as per 4Crawler's page.

start engine and let it warm up.Take a can of brake clean and start spraying around top of engine.listen for rpm changes.report findings back here....

Well guys, I am happy to announce that the solution is a new TPS. Installed on Sat and is working perfectly.
Thanks for the help. Got a little off track about the issue getting worse when it warmed up. Didn't make sense. Had an idea that it was the TPS, just wanted to make sure that it was not some other thing I overlooked.

Hi guys,

I got a 1990 22re 4runner
Runs smooth when cold but idling rough when warm and got low power until it hits 3000rpms
The weird thing is that i have none of these problems even when warm as soon as i unplugged the gauge/reverse light/heat blower fuse
I ve checked the wiring and everything seems to look fine
According to other posts, sounds like EGR valve issue but could this fuse be related to EGR???
Just want to make sure before starting any work on it

Can anyone help me on this one???

Or at least can anyone with the same idling/power problem could take off his fuse to see if it does the same (the middle one on driver's kick panel), i'd feel less alone….

Would your runner ever almost stall when going from 40-0 when coming up to a stop sign??

that is what mine is doing
also smells like gas today when it was really cold. . .and heater didnt work to well

Interesting. My '94 does that on occasion, but only if I am under hard braking. i.e. slamming the brakes down to stop really quickly.
Let me know if you found out what the culprit and fix is.

IT is a 86 and it looks stock lol

i am a noob but. . .i really think it is my spark plugs and wires! At least i hope that is what it is. . .i hope it is that the engine drowns when i stop instead of some expensive fix. . .cant rebuild till next year lol

Ahh. I know its not my plugs/wires dist. cap. I replaced all those about 5K miles ago when I redid the top end. I also just checked them all out when servicing my girl as I had let her sit for a couple years. My guess is something in the fuel system, because on mine it just seems like it ran out of gas.
Well as I go through it if I find the cause I'll post up the info. For now I'm kind of ignoring that as it's really not a big problem.
Hope yours is a quick easy fix.

ya some one else on some threads some one said something about a fuel pulse damper.

so that is like 90 brand new.
