Rod Damage
Im newly registered at yotatech so sorry if this is a dumb question, but any help would be great.
A friend of mine told me that I have rod damage on my 1992 4runner. I know the basics about reepairs but not enough to know what to do in my current situation. The toyota service department said that itll be cheaper to just get a new engine. Should I opt for another 3.0, get mine repaired or go for the 3.4? My girlfriends uncle would charge me $1000 to repair my 3.0 but she sasy that he is not trustworthy and would end up screwing me over. Thanks in advance |
lol sorry about the screwy uncle why not just buy a new kit have ur crank checked at a machine shop lotta guys have just replaced them that way. or take out the engine flip it over and do it that way
|
It can easily be fixed for $1000, getting someone who'll do it right for that price is another matter.
But if you do it yourself, including paying for any necessary machine work you can't do, you could cut that price in half most likely. |
Thanks for the quick responses!
The thing is I dont know how to take any of it out lol I dont want to be experimenting and ruin something else. What would be the quickest, cheapest, and best thing to do overall? Someday I would want more power so I would consider a 3.4 swap. |
if it's just the rods that need to be replaced. get a engine hoist drain out the fluids and flip it over and check the bottom end and replace those parts.

yotarover-
is it easy to replace the rods or to get to them? I just dont know if I would be able to do it. Could there be anything else wrong with the engine, when i turn the truck on it just makes knocking noise. Thanks for all the advice |
when you get the engine out of the truck. put it on a engine stand flip it over. take off the oil pan, you'll see the crank remove the caps bolts. undo the rear seal and timing cover pull it out with the rods and pistons connected. take to a machine shop have them check'em. if ur crank is fine just have them replace the bearing and get new rods drop it back in bolt it up.

Ill see if i give it a try this weekend. Hopefully all goes well

don't do it if you don't have another dd. just unbolt the engine, drain out all the fluids pull out the engine, call a machine shop and ask if they will check it out tell them you'll bring the whole engine. (prob gonna cost more if they do it) if everything checks out and you dont need any machine work, order a connecting rod kit, and either have them or do it your self. it's pretty straight forward. im building a new 22re right now

Yea, I think that'll be a better choice for me. Thanks or all the great help! I really do appreciate it
