Replaced brake pads and now no brakes?

yeah! I have no idea what happened but after installing new pads front and rear, my pedal goes to the floor and barely stops me. I bled the brakes and the rears have a ton of air in them. We went through about a bottle of fluid before getting tired of getting more air than fluid but the front didn't have any air in the lines, nor did the LSPV. We did try lowering the LSPV arm so it would use mostly the back brakes and no change in either position. I still have the original master cylinder but why would it go bad after doing a pad job? It always had a lot of slack in it though. I ordered one anyways and will swap it out. Anyone have any ideas on anything else it could be?

Kinda dumb question..but are your lines leaking? I know Yota's are hearty on oil and fluid, but sounds like somethin's not closed or leaking. Does it matter it the cap for the MC is on or off??

Maybe the rear wheel cylinders had corrosion in them and putting in the new shoes pushed the pistons into the corrosion. Pull back the dust boot and see if there is any brake fluid in them. If there is, then they need to be changed. I have heard that master cylinders can be destroyed the same way.

Not trying to be an a$$, but did you properly adjust the rear brake shoe clearence before bleeding the brake lines? If not, then the automatic adjusters may still be trying to get the shoes into the right position (or the adjusters are shot), leading to little brake pedal.

Taking a different approach. Did you "break them in" before just cruising down the road? Whenever you replace break pads, shoes, rotors, or drums, you need to seat them. Just google "how to seat brakes" and you should find some howto's on that. It's really simple, just a series of NEAR stops from about 60 MPH. You don't want to completely stop, that can warp rotors. You also obviously want a clear safe road to do it on, not the highway.

I'd be willing to bet this is your problem. I recently did a complete brake job on the front end of my 4runner. The pedal felt really funny, which is normal. It will either feel really soft and go to the floor, or it will be super stiff, neither of which will stop you very well. During this series of NEAR stops, the pedal will fluxuate between soft and hard, then finally settle down and feel normal again.

Here's one write up on seating the brakes. http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

Those are for performance brakes, so 60 MPH is what's suggested, with just regular brakes, I find that 30 MPH works just fine. It's also hard to find a road close to you where you can do 60, stop, 60 stop, etc. etc.

Hope that helps!
