Removing Alternator Bracket
Hey guys,
Im trying to remove the upper alternator bracket on my 22re and can not find the second bolt that is holding it down. I removed the 14mm bolt that goes through the block but cant find the second bolt that is still holding it in. I circled the bolt I removed in red in this picture. Thanks http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a.../misc20021.jpg |
If memory serves me, its @ the same location or area as the dipstick support is. Don't know if you need to remove PS pump to get to it, I've always had it off anyways.
Why you taking the bracket off anyways? |
Im switching over to a GM alternator and have a new bracket that I need to install in place of the stock one. I'll check around the dipstick area.
Thanks |
If you are talking about the tensioner bracket (below), only the one pivot bolt (the one you circled) and the lock down bolt in the slot:

That's it but I removed that one bolt and it still will not come off. The alternator is off already. I hope I dont have to remove the power steering pump in order to get it out.

i'm pretty sure there's a dogleg that comes off the rear of the bracket and ties in to where the dipstick is mounted on the '86. I'll go look.
|
yep there is on mine. You may be able to get it off with out taking PS pump off but it'll be tight. Good luck.

That is only for early 20 and 22R engines.

in the following pic, you can see the bracket ear reaching over the top of the water pump fitting, just behind the fluorescent green bracket just below the center of the pic and it's bolt holds the dipstick tube in place (hard to see but it is black)

Thanks guys for all the help! I just got it out. It wasnt hard to get it out either with the PS pump still their. I'll post some pics of my GM alternator once I get it in.
|
It'd be cool if you showed along the way pics, the kind I never have patients to take. I'm interested to see the route you take and the way you wire it.
|
How did you finally get it out?

Do you remember if the bottom bracket was threaded when you removed the alternator? The bolt that allows it to pivot had a rounded head so I grinded it off. I can't tap the bolt out so it is either seized or threaded but I can't tell.

Your description is vague but I'm going to assume you mean the top bolt which pinchs the mount and keeps the alternator from pivoting.. Yes this is threaded into the alternator body. |
