removed chrome windshield trim for paint job, now what!
Hi guys, I finally got around to getting my 88 painted. I was able to remove the ugly chrome trim that ran down the rain gutters with no problem at all, the windsheild was a different story! I bent it up and broke all of the clips that held it on! Did Toyota sell the 86-88 series 4x4 pickups with out chrome around the windsheild? I really dont like the way it looks and dont want to put it back on if I dont have to.. worst case Ill paint it black... The clips.. do I need to have the windsheild removed to replace the clips or can you just push them into the sealant that holds the windsheild in? I really dont want to have my windsheild removed.. I hate chrome! Thanks again, Matt and yes pics will follow once I get it back from the body shop! With the new fiberglass bed it should look like a new 1988!

clips & trim
My windshield has been replaced a couple times and the trim doesn't fit so well anymore either. I bought new clips for about $20 and a full set of used trim on ebay for about $100. I've never seen any other solution. My 4Runner had black painted trim originally and I've repainted it several times already. I intend to paint this used chrome trim black and replace the bent up stuff that's on there now. I haven't ripped the old parts off yet, so I'm not sure how the clips and trim go back on. You'd have to use a lot of sealant to get trim to stay on there if you go that route. I think that would become a big mess.
If anyone knows about putting trim back on, I'd like to hear about it as well.
Thanks.

I have the same problem. Took the windshild out to re-seal it as it was leaking. Tryed to put the trim back on when the sealent was wet but no go. Now the top piece is bent a bit and won't fit right. Been driving without trim for a few months now. That stuff is expensive...........

It may be too late now, but check with your windsheild installer to see if you can get a replacement seal/gasket that will delete the need for the trim. I had this done on my BMW a few years ago, after the chrome trim on it had gotten tweaked to a point that it no longer looked good. The windsheild looks a lot better without it, IMHO. I'm sure that it must be possible to find the same kind of seal for the yotas, as well.

I'll be doing this before too long on my 87.
