Reground cam pics-Would you run it?

Got this reground cam in the mail a few days ago. Some scoring and a couple nicks as evidenced in the pictures below. I suspect it would probably be alright but would like some opinions before I throw it in. Thanks!

Can you feel those with your thumbnail??

Do the journals mike out within specs??? You might give the cam a plasti-guage test on your head to determine actual clearances..

I don't think I would worry too much about the concentric scoring, but I might take a riffler file to any nicks, or dings.

Depending on what you find for clearances, I'd run it.

Let me get this right
You bought this "reground cam' and that's what they sent you? If it were me I'd send it back for a refund!

Thanks! Yes I will definitely throw some plastigauge on it for what it's worth, was just wondering about that scoring mostly. Slight catching on the thumbnail test on the worst of it but I think I'll give it a go.

Well, it is a regrind so I wasn't expecting perfection on the journals, I just don't know how bad is too bad. So far I got 1 for and 1 against...

Why not?
If they just did a regrind it should be perfect. I have a feeling that it's not reround just a cam they had laying around. Did you measure the diameters? Are they full size, or undersize?
I wouldn't even bother with it, just send it back unless you're pressed for time

It's the cam LOBES that are reground. The only way the journals might be refinished would be to weld them up and then regrind to stock diameter. Not cost effective; might as well start with a new billet.

If this cams clearances in the head are good, this cam should serve well.

You price a brand new cam that is not chinese slave labor goods and you might change your mind

parchisi 04-15-2018 08:04 PM

I had a 'new' cam in the head before and after 30k the lobes had some bad galling. Not sure if that had to do with the new Chinese cast camshaft or a lube/oiling issue, but that's why I decided to go with a stock regrind this time and see what happens.

As long as your clearance is within spec go for it !!
