Regear: Power vs. Gas milage

I have an 88 runner 22re 5 speed :hillbill: I was thinking about regearing to 4.88's. But with gas prices rising to 3$ a gallon i'm thinking not to? The problem is I have to be into the throttle to stay up a hill in 3rd or 4rth. usually not 4th. it just keeps losing speed. But would I lose much if I reageared i got 4.10's now. If you can post your before and after mpg and tire size. Thanks

We'll that depends on what size tires you have? I just recently re geared to 4.56 and i love them. I have the 22r motor and 31 inch tires. Big improvement on power. surprisingly i got 50 more miles to the tank of gas. Also put in truetracs while i was in there. By all means re gear.

If you're not upping your tire size you may not want to go to a gear ratio that much deeper.

If it's a lot of highway miles and you want to keep RPM's a bit lower, but still get a little extra UUMMFFF mabey pickup a set of 4.30 diffs from an auto. They're pretty common, and you could pick up a set for probably the cost of the 1 set of gears and instal kit(...ok, mabey a little more)

You can find complete 4.56 diff sets too, not quite as common, but still out there. "Little" more money though, but still cheaper than buying new gears and having them installed.
