Rear Window Not Working with Key One Direction

This is a 1986 4runner sr5. All the electronics worked fine for rear window both button and key. Last week within the space of using it then coming back an hour later, the key doesn't roll down the back window, but it will still roll it up, button still works fine. What is the mechanism inside that powers the window can it stop working one direction? Just wanna get an idea before I dig into it do you get at it by removing interior backdoor panel or by removing the key cylinder from the outside?

:coffee:well do some trouble shooting it could just be a broken wire .

One that just pulled loose .

It could be that set of contacts in the hatch switch just wore out

Could be in the relay.

Same Problem

Just had the same problem. It should be the window/wiper control module in the drivers side panel right behind drivers seat. The module has 4 relays in it. Only one went on mine (the down relay for the key switch alone). Sounds like the same one for you. From what I could discern, the 4 relays seem to be UP from interior switch, Down from interior switch, Up from key switch, and lastly, Down from key switch. I picked up a new module off eBay for around $50 shipped. Problem solved.

I have read a few threads on replacing the relays in the module and am going to attempt this to fix the old unit to have a spare for the future. If you search around on this site and Google "1st gen 4Runner window/wiper control relay replacement" you will find a load of info on it.

Good Luck.

Good problem description. A problem well-stated is a problem almost-solved.
Motor must be good because it still works up/down with console buttons.
Most likely the issue is down signal from tailgate switch is not getting to relay module.

That's Da Man!

That is good troubleshooting question. See schematic below.
When you twist tailgate (rear control switch) key to up position, you connect pin 12 to ground.
When you twist tailgate key to down position, you connect pin 11 to ground. See if that's happening.
Could easily be broken wire, especially where it flexes between tailgate and body.

Don't yet. Take resistance checks and inspection first. Besides, you can't properly remove key cylinder from outside.

It COULD be. Don't jump to conclusion.

Pin-out numbering:

Sample of pins numbered. To check if tailgate switch grounds pins properly, it is OK to disconnect connector

While you're there, you might as well:
  • Try out Pins 4 & 5 to see mechanism -HOW console switch works, AND
  • Check to make sure no moisture is getting into that compartment through the B-pillar vent. I found that rubber flaps inside my vent are gone. Will replace with bicycle inner tubing

Good info thanks. Looks like I'll check the module and wiring first before I dig into tailgate.

One Quick check you can do even before you break out the multi-meter:

All conditions nrmal, with tailgate closed of course, Connector still on module, jump pin 11(blue wire with white stripe) to ground. If window rolls down, issue could be ("down" side contacts of tailgate switch OR wiring from switch to pin 11.
