Rear Tailgate Function
Hello All,
I have what is probably a somewhat dumb question, but I've done searches and cannot find the answer. I have an 88 4runner that I purchased a little while ago, and when I purchased it, the top was off. When I put the top back on, the rear window wouldn't roll up. It sounds as though power isn't even getting to the motor.... I know I have to check the fuses and relays and the bolt sensor on the drivers side. But my question is in regards to the tailgate. When you use the key, is it just supposed to make the window roll down, or is it supposed to unlock the tailgate as well? My dad has a 98 4runner, and the key does both, but it makes sense to me that mine should just roll the window down. Thanks for the help. Sorry again for the dumb question. Steve |
you use the key to roll down the window all the way then you unlock from the inside.
iirc, on my moms 99 4runner since it has the hatch, not the tailgate, the key doesn't unlock it form the back it is only for the windows also. but on that model, if the doors are unlocked, so is the rear. |
yea, in order to unlock the tailgate, you have to roll the window down and manually unlock it... but you dont have to lock it to roll the window up... it will lock it automatically...

Do you have all of the original bolts? There is one that must be in place for the rear window motor to operate. (Its a safety switch). I believe its the first one in from the back on the drivers side.

2nd from the rear on the left side is the special bolt "B". ;)
|
also have the window motor checked to see if its functioning properly. but yeah like everyone said the key is for up/down.

Awesome...
Thanks everybody. Yeah, I'm only missing two of the original bolts, but I made sure to put one in the safety slot. I'm gonna check on bypassing the relay later today. Thanks for the info. |
