rear pinion seal

I'm almost 100% positive that my rear pinion seal is leaking. There is an oil stripe on the fuel tank and the underbody next to and above the front of the rear pumpkin right where oil would spray if the seal was going out.

Now is this something I can do in the garage in a couple of hours or will it be easier to swap in the spare third member that I have? I never thought I'd have "extra" third members laying around but I'm glad I do.

Thank you.

It's just a matter of taking the driveshaft off at the third member, removing the pinion shaft nut and washer, removing the old seal, wipe the area clean and install the new seal. Replace the washer and nut, (Toyota recommends using a new nut), torqueing the nut down, and bolting the driveshaft back on. Very simple fix.

one thing to think about while doing this repair, junkers, is WHY the oil is being pushed past the pinion seal...

either the dif breather was plugged, or the Pinion Pre-Load is waaaaaay outta wack because the bearing is toast and is making the seal opening oblong...

get my drift??

personally, id make sure that the spare dif has a new seal and that the Carrier Bearing Pre-Load is TIGHT and throw that one in... then rebuild the one you took out...

just my .02 cents tho...

I agree with the diff breather...I did the pinion seal on mine in about 45 minutes after checking the diff breather and finding it crusted shut with mud. After the $12.00 seal was changed, no problems.

i belive my pinion seal went out, but my rearend has oil everywhere. the entire rearend, the back plates of the drums , my leaf springs, spare tire, gas tank, shocks, oil is burning on my tail pipe and its all over the bed . should it be everywhere like that? in the pictures it only shows a small amount on the third member

Small leak, a little oil. Bigger leak, more oil. Is the oil being flung out from the spinning pinion flange? If so, that and the air moving under the truck as you drive can spray it all over. Might also check for a clogged diff. breather fitting.

i changed mine today. wayy easier than i thought. took about 20 mins to do

Junkers88 04-25-2009 06:29 AM

I never did fix mine. I dropped in a different third with 4.56's and a locker.:banger:

But do you have a Locker?

gary96360 04-25-2009 06:34 PM

im too poor to buy a locker. i should had bought a lockright but i just bought a body lift instead. 230 bucks total was too great of a deal to pass up at napa. i should had got it under account and saved 30 percent. i forgot to ask to get it under account but whatever its cheaper than on ebay

Mine leaked in my 93 and I fixed it twice. Then I sold it. My 94 started leaking and I decided to yank the 3rd and put 4.88's in and an Aussie. This led to an SAS :banger: :bigok:
I decided it was wise to take the third to a mech. Mikes Specialty Repair MSR here on Yotatech. Mike did my 3rd with the solid pinion spacer to help insure no leaking would occur.
I got tired of seeing that little wet spot on the bottom part of the flange. :(
Beware, that little leak could cost you a fortune :hillbill:

Hi guys. Anyone have a picture of the rear diff breather? I believe I have this same problem. Oh and I saw there was a guy from Wellsboro, PA on here. Hi ya! I just graduated from MU.

Oh yes! Trips to the Arnot Mall were always fun....the small bit of civilization we have up there. So, do you have a pic of the rear diff breather?? :)
