Yes to your question about wheel turning same direction when jacked up. BUT......it will do that with a welded diff too. Have another person try to hold opposite wheel while you turn the other. A locker will ratchet and allow opposite rotation.


The red/orange sealer on the front diff cover can be factory. All my IFS trucks had it and I never got into them.


On any truck you didn't originally own, you will never know FOR SURE what the gear ratios are. Ya gotta physically check.

My 93 will soon have the 4.56's from my 94... 94 has a blown transfer, and some frame rot from sitting for the last 2 years....

I have got a wrecked '92 4Runner, door tag says tranny A340H, gears G254 (4.56) and factory equipped with 225/75r15 tires.
My '95 4Runner with 5 speed has same 4.56 gears and 225/ tires listed on its door label. Both 3.0s'

Don't they usually come in 4runners 5 speed 4.56 and at times you can get 4.88 G144 on door in 31 tires tow package only in autos though

Just a tip, if your e-brake works you can pull it slightly in low-traction situations with an open diff and it will help transfer some power to the wheel with traction, not a lot but it's something.

The door sticker on my truck (3.0, 5 spd) shows 225 tires and a 4.56 rear end. As I understand it, the vehicle was never intended to run with the 225 tires, but was shipped from Japan that way to lower the import taxes. Then the dealer would install the proper 10.50/31 inch tires. Government rules sometimes cause strange behavior...

4.56 was an auto option as well. most canadian runners that were auto had 4.56

on open diff tires will turn in opposite directions by hand and locked or welded will turn in same direction. as for gear ratio spin the tire a predetermined # of times and count how many times thw drive shaft turns and do the math to find out the gear ratio. you tube has many videos showing how to do this. i woulnt trust the tag on an old truck unless you know with out a dout that it has never been tampered with. 410/411 - 433 - 456 - 488 can be considered factory ratios,( depending on option/package combos ) 529 - 570 and up are not. i jumped in this tread a little late but its just good stuff to know.
