really bad mileage

hey, so just ran my first tank of fuel through my 22re 4runner. i wasn't impressed. i filled it back up at 1/4 tank. and i only had put 240km on it. i put 47 litres in it. thats like 12mpg. any ideas why its so low? i have kept it in 4wd quite a bit, done quite a bit of plowing as well in 4lo. don't know if that would drag it down that much. any thoughts would be apprecieated. also i got 31's on it. don't know if that makes too much difference though.
thanks

You answered your own question, you have kept it in 4wd quite a bit and have done some plowing, and you have 31`s on it. All of that is going to effect your mileage.

31's, kept in 4wd quite a bit... besides the tires... there would be gears and such in play while in 4wd, and 4-lo which lets the engine rev higher for lower vehicle speed / more power to the ground... all of which sucks fuel simply because they're turning and have gear oil to contend with.

Yep. I agree- you answered your own question.

And I bet that since it's so cold, you leave it idling quite a bit just to keep the heater running too, right? ;)

I dont think any of us are supposed to be impressed with gas mileage. You want to be impressed,go buy a Prius.LMAO

ok, just wanted to make sure thats what is probly causing it. i'm gonna be doing more highway driving this time so i'll see what it is for that. i'll try and keep it out of 4wd as much as i can to just to see. thanks

Here in the states in the winter time they also reformulate our gas for the colder weather and that will sometimes lower your mileage a little. I don`t know if they do that in British Columbia or not, but thats something to keep in mind also.

Im sure its bitter freezing blizzard cold up there.Hell Im spending 10 minutes warming mine up 2 or 3 times a day, that eats up alot of gas out of a full tank.

ya, it probably has to do with all of that. just kinda trying to get another issue figured out, might have something to do with it too. i'll see what happens, thanks for the responses though.
