Real world 3vze highway gas mileage
I thought this was pretty interesting:
Last week my friend and I took my truck to Chicago and back for a round trip of about 1900 miles. We took I-80 pretty much all the way.
The way out we had good weather and averaged about 75-80 mph (god bless flat land). We averaged about 13.5 mpg (corrected for tire size).
The way back we hit about five blizzards and ended up doing 60-70 mph the whole way. The actual driving only took about two hours longer than the way out, and mostly due to traffic entering Manhattan. This leg of the trip we averaged about 16.3 mpg.
Basically, slowing down 10 mph netted us a 20% increase in efficiency. I always knew that 55-60 is the sweet spot for most unaerodynamic bricks to drive at, but I never actually realized how great of a difference speed could make on the highway.
Just thought it was interesting...

I guess I should be happy with the 19 I manage to eek out on highway driving around here. But it ticks me off because back in the late 90s I used to get 24 very reliably, all the time, before they started diluting our gas with corn water.

ugh, I hate that 10%...
But yeah, that seems about right. I have a pretty heavy right foot, combined with 4.30 gears and 33" tires (and about 500 pounds of supplies that stay in the truck with me all the time). If I ever got 24 mpg I would probably cry.

My 3VZE 2wd xtra cab gets an average of 18 mpg 50 city/50 hwy driving. I have never taken a hwy only trip in this truck, I wonder how much the mileage would go up on a hwy trip. I also drive the speed limit, 35-45 in town with lots of lights & traffic & 65 hwy.

Since you probably used a winter blend of gas you might want to check the mpg again in the summer. I check my mpg regularly and I get right at 21mpg highway at 70-75mph during the summer and 19mpg during the winter.

so the last 8500 miles I've had 35" KM2s on the truck. Same 4.30 gears, and for most of it with a lockrite in the rear. I do a lot of commuting between my home on Long Island and UVM in Burlington VT but also a fair bit of wheeling and around town driving. I put the 35s on May of 2010 and have averaged 14.8 mpg corrected for tire size. My average gas mileage over the 13240 miles I had the 33" A/Ts was 14.0 mpg (Dec 2008-Jan 2010). My driving habits have changed a little, although I would say that I've gotten heavier on the throttle than anything to account for the big tires...I do definitely keep the 3vze revving in the 2800-3400 rpm range most of the time which is higher than with the 33s. In any case, my mpg have been increasing, and my wallet is happy.

Wow man. You're getting better mpg than me with my 4runner, 22re, 4.56 gears and 33" tires! I took my Yakima bars off and so far, I am getting about 2 mpg better! I usually get 12-14 right now in the winter with hubs locked and 4wd 1/3 of the time.
