Question a Question of Gas Mileage

Ok...

I have been keeping my gas records pretty faithfully since I purchased my 92 Runner in Feb... and after looking at the totals, I am slightly concerned. At it's worst, I got 7.72 MPG (snowy nasty week that I drove in 4WD most of the time). The best week, I got 16.9 MPG (this was mostly highway interstate miles).

so my question is this... is this normal for a 92? Do I need a serious tuneup on my 3.slow? What can I do to help increase my MPG?

Just curious, opinions please and what kinda mileage do others get?

I think 15 m.p.g. city & 18 m.p.g. highway is what was on the window sticker for the '94 - '95 models on the lot. I would think 17 m.p.g. (16.9) is pretty close to normal for a '92 as well.

That was at its best... the average is probably around 13.5 or so...

Should there be sucha drastic drop from 16.9 to 7.72 all due to driving in 4WD???

Not just because of 4wd....but if you were driving in snow and it had some depth you are using energy pushing through it and spinning.

Vehicles also tend to get poorer mileage in very cold weather, and in heavy traffic the trip that took you an hour doubles in time with lots of additional stops and starts. All of these starts you end up spinning a bit before you get up to speed.

Mine only gets 10 - 11 m.p.g in mixed driving on dry streets in moderate temperatures. I don't get into the skinny pedal aggressively either.

That seems normal to me I averaged 15.6 on my last tank which was mixed city and highway driving. BTW mines a 3.0 auto 4Runner On all highway driving the highest I've gotten has benn about 19 mpg. I assume trucks get better mileage than the 4Runners because they are lighter

I wasn't complaining at all trust me. I was just saying with my oversized tires and stock gearing with 15mpg he should be getting better than he is. Before I got the new tires I was running 31's and was avg about 20-21mpg. Originally I was only planning on buying a new set of 33's and came across the 35's(90% tread left) used for only $550 WITH steel rims, so I made room for the 35's.

Well mine has a auto tranny and yes... its a Runner not a truck. The weather here has been cold and wet... but the roads are mostly dry now.... My driving in mostly local city driving, not much interstate driving. I guess I attribute the start/stop driving as part of the reason for the low MPG.... I also do not know when the last full tuneup was done on this vehicle... so that might be contributing to the low MPG as well....

Well, check out your plugs, dist. cap, wires, fuel filter...maybe. Just start inspecting everything....see where it's at. Certainly a tune up won't hurt at all. 7mpg+ seems very poor to me...snow considered. I get better than that when the weather is wintery around here. Even with hauling and hills. Then, I'm also easy on the gas.

BTW, I have a '92 4rnr bone stock. Well, except the ISR mod.
