Angry The quench on my 22R does not look good...

I just got home with my short block and checked the quench to find, all the pistons under deck height! #1 was at -.006, #2 -.009, #3 -.009, and #4 -.009... What should I do? Do you think the machine shop will correct this for free? Or were they counting on me overlooking this? Thanks for your opinions.

Heres a check list of what the machine shop did:
overbord/honed +.020 (EB's pistions)
recondition rods
polished crankshaft
deck block
assemble engine

Yah, I found Ted's right up very helpful. I actually have it printed out and next to my work space.

What you need to do is have them deck it .006 to get them all as close as possible. I did that with my 3vze, it costs you a set of bearings though.

Why does it cost a set of bearings?

Was the head decked? Accoring to that ENGNBLDR article you want the head and block decked in .010 increments so you can fix the cam timing, unless you get an adjustible timing gear...

Yes the head was decked also, by how much I don't know? I think I will get a adjustible cam gear just to be safe. But I'm finding it real hard to justify spending 100 bucks to shave .009" off an already decked block ...

Then leave it alone. There is only one way to get things where you want them and thats the machine shop. Decking to the point where the one or more piston sticks out above the block isn't a good idea though.

Thw quench on a 22RE is supposed to be up to .006" above the deck... take a look at that link a few posts up. You also want all the pistons to have the same quench for uniform compression/power...
