PS Pump Problems
Ok so my 89 P/U w/ V6 PS pump crapped out on me so I put a new one in, attached all the hoses but I am still losing fluid, like i dirve 2 miles and I have to refill the resivour, when I look in there in looks as if it is coming from the preasure hose where it connects to the pump, I can feel fluid there but can't see the leak, has anyone had anything like this happen or how can you tell when the presure hose is bad, cause the cheapest one I can get is from Napa w/ a AAA discount for like 85 bones, not sure what to do other than rip it all apart and try putting everything back together with some gasket sealer.

It's been a while since I did this rebuild but IIRC the seal kit had a new gasket for the high pressure line connection. Don't let the pump run dry or you'll be looking at a lot more bones. |
I had mine resealed at the stealership in the upwards of $180.00... it leaked again in a little over a year. I purchased a rebuilt unit with a lifetime warranty, for about $100.00 flushed all powersteeing fluid from the system and all works well. I'd replace all hoses and clamps while you're at it.

I'm about to rebuild my PS pump. I wonder how long the hoses are good for. I've got 15 years on mine so far.

I'd bet $10 you are losing fluid out the SUCTION port on top, and not the pressure port at all, as if you buy a rebuilt/new ps pump you have to swap the suction port over from the old to the new pump. Replace the O-ring on it and you'll solve your problem.
I'd also recommend you use ATF I or II w/ Dexron like the owner's manual and FSM say. Invest in a FSM for your rig if you are going to keep working on it too. Good luck and update us when you get it fixed please. :guitar: |
Do you mean the 0-ring that's at the connection between the resevoir and the pump body? [3VZE]
I was trying to find ATF II at the auto parts store. All they have is ATF III. The label says that it meets or exceeds the ATF II designation. Does that mean it's o.k. for our PS systems? Here's the Castrol product page: http://www.castrol.com/castrol/produ...tentId=6031861 |
ATF III is fine. The "suction" port is the port that is on the pump that pulls the ATF from the reservoir. The "pressure" port is where it comes out pressurized going to the steering box and then returns through the OEM cooler to the reservoir. Those little O-rings are "non-reusable" items and go bad easily. That is what I would check first as I've been there, done that, got the spare ps pump to prove it! :hillbill:

Wabbit - I think I'm talking VZN and you're talking RN series PS pumps. Check out:
http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...11powerste.pdf . . . . although the O-ring on the RN suction port is about the same thing as the O-ring where the VZN resevoir joins to the pump body. I think I'll try replacing that 0-ring first and see what happens. I'll keep you posted! |
Has anybody removed the resevoir without removing the pump on a 3VZE? The resevoir mounting bolt on the engine side looks pretty inaccesible if I leave the pump on. I'd sure like to try replacing the O-ring for the resevoir without rebuilding the pump. My pump works fine . . . . just leaks!
