Angry PS Fluid in PS Pump ~ Research has been done ~ Just a few Q's

[quote=tc;50854965]My experience has been the same as RedChili - using power steering fluid instead of ATF has resulted in leaks and blown power steering pumps (yes plural) in short order.
quote]

Yes, I did ignortatly and arrogantly fill up my PS pump with cheap PS fluid, thinking that the ATF warning was stupid considering they make specificv fluid for PS.

Now I sit here thinking, "Who was I to question Toyota's ATF warning. It is their product. I guess they should know what it needs."

Any how, my PS pump is shot.

I did do enough research to know that I made a big no-no, but couldn't find a few specific answers that I needed.

I can now add a bottle of fluid (now just realizing that I kept using PS fluid to test the problem) and it won't last longer than35 miles. I can see fluid seaping out from the gear box.

I'm assuming my PS pump is toast as well, correct?

I should flush the system with ATF using the bad pump, then swap in new one and add ATF, correct?

What about the leakage from the gear box? What does that mean?

when you think about it, good ATF would be designed to put up with much more abuse than PS fluid...so that's why i usually prefer ATF, should be able to stand up better to cold, heat, excess pressure, etc. hope you work this out, power steering parts are no cheap .

Does sound like your Power Steering pump is beyond repair. As for the steering box, try to find out where it is leaking. I would bet there would be no issues with the box its self, other then a seal.

Good luck man.

You're not the only one B4.... My 4Runner's been down on and off for the past two years and it's supposed to be my DD! I as well did the PS mistake. I replaced the pump and loaded the system with ATF and I was good to go. My gearbox leaked a little before the PS deal, and it still leaks VERY slowly, like a drop every once in a while, I'll notice it sliding down my skidplate.
