problem starting my new 94 4runner (pics for ur viewing pleasure)

i recently got a 94 4runner 5 speed with a 3 inch body life and 31x10.50s to go along with my 95 4runner. well anyway, it had a hard time starting. its nothing with the actual starting or charging system cuz it will turn over all day long but its somethin with the engine. it takes forever to get the engine to "clear out" i guess is how u would put it. when u turn the key, it cranks up and goes to about 2500 rpms then just dies. it normally does this a bunch of times and no matter if you give it gas or not it will just die. on the lucky tries i just floor it and seems like it clears it out and then it will idle and run fine all day long till i shut it off again. it doesnt matter whether its cold or not. it has new plugs and wires. im out of stuff to try. do yall have any ideas? Thanks.
-Kyle

Cold start injector? Fuel pressure?

Just a couple off the top of my head.

You might try pulling some CEL codes and see if the ECU has any stored in it.

Umm,, no machine necessary to get the codes. Additionally, many on here have complained that the chain parts stores don't do well pulling the OBD-I codes (what we have on most of our 2nd gens). Just jumper the Te1 and E1 pins in the Diagnosis Port (passenger side fender well under the hood) and turn the ignition key to 'ON'-- then read the flashes. For a more complete explanation,, follow this link:

went out and pulled the infamous 71 code from my 4runner. this means the EGR valve. ive read a bunch of stuff on here and found out a bunch of people talkin about it. one thing that i wanted to try was what snorkledepth did, witch was to change the VSV and clear the tubes. i have read his description throuughly but i still dont have the foggiest idea of what he is talking about and where these parts are located. i see the green lookin things on the passenger side fenderwell but the tubes run straight down and then connect to a metal lookin thingy and from there i am lost. can someone tell me how to clean out my vsv tubes. also is there a way to check and see if it is the egr valve itself or somethin else. ive heard the horror stories of taking it off and i dont wanna spend money on it if i dont have to

More details and you might find more help from this board.

Pics of your "thingys" would be great.
Engine, 3.0 or 4cyl?

The VSV's have a vacuum line in, and then one out going to whichever device they happen to control. Lines should just pull off, and you could blow them out with compressed air. Hard lines... just remove tubing at both ends and blow them out as well.

There is a bunch of info here: http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...fsm/index.html

How to check VSV's, EGR, codes, vacuum line diagrams, etc.

I am not sure about a 3.slow but on RE there is only one O2 sensor and its before the cat. This means that it doesnt know if you do or dont have a cat and wont trip the light. I took the cat out of my 95 with no problems, other than a horrible smelling exhaust.

its the 3.0. i went out and messed around with every single vacumm hose and nothing had any effect it will rev up to 1500 rpms for 3 to 4 seconds then just die and cut off. dunno wut else to try other then takin the EGR valve off but i would really rather not have to buy a new one right now if i didnt have to. is there ANY other thing that yall would recommend to try and see before i just go buy another one. i would hate to buy a new one, and it not be the egr. im just soo lost. man im glad that my 95 doesnt do this.

i dont know if the egr ports clog on these things but if you had a vaccum pump then you could hook it up to the line to the egr valve when its idling and apply vaccum, it should die or run like ÅÅÅÅ. If it doesnt die then your egr ports are clogged. If not then its prolly a problem with the valve.

I might take a look at your fuel pressure/ delivery again. There is a way to jumper the fuel pump from the diagnostics port to hear if it runs. You can lightly crack open the cold start line to see if there is fuel line pressure, but hooking up a gauge is safer and gives a better idea of low pressure.

I also agree with 4x4nala and check your MAF and intake. I once had a crack at the intake hose underneath, hard to see. Gave some real trouble starting, running, until I felt around a bit and replaced the intake hose.

94 4runner starts runs for 1 min then shuts off???

hi guys not sure if putting this up in the right area but the threads seem similar to the issues im having my 94 4runner 3ltr v6 starts runs for a min then shuts itself of wont start again unless i cycle the key tried replacing the ecu from another 94 v6 4runner hasnt helped, ive got good fuel pressure ive swapped and replaced every fuse and relay ii can find with new ones ignition timing is spot on dizzy is a second hand replacement ive got injector pulse, has good earths no shorts in the wiring harness itr only started doing this after i recently replaced the clutch, only error code the diagnostics is pulling up is a 21 code (oxy sensor) it was disconected to pull the gearbox back and replace clutch and was as far as i know plugged back into the wires it was previously connected to (it was pulling up the 21 code for ages before it was disconected, prior to this problem i had issues were it wouldnt start on the key but replacing the ecu has fixed that (had to roll start it for ages before that) does anyone know what would be causing the computer to shut the engine off after 1 minute every time its started
