Problem starting? Distributor 180 out of place?

I have a question. dOES anyone know if you tighten down the valves just a little over specs not to tight will it cause the truck not to turn on? its justt turning over but not turning on and then after a while it turns on but then dies instantly?? anyone have any ideas?

A little bit as in the next feeler gauge up/down won't cause it to not run.
The engine type and what you have done to it will help people give you better answers.

You may have installed the distributed 180deg out.
Basically the engine may have been on the wrong stroke at tdc when you installed it.

oh ok.. so whati do now is what? put the crank at tdc and make sure the distributor is on #4 and pull it out and put it back on #1? which is 11 o clock?

I don't remember exactly, I just did it by mistake when I rebuilt my engine. :hillbill:
You could try the tdc stroke that has you distributor 180deg out then remove it, turn it 180deg and reinstall. If it is already installed correctly and the problem is something else then it won't start even if the other problem is fixed.

In my sig there is a link to factory service manuals. It should tell you what stroke it should be on and how to install it.

I just did it. You have to crank to TDC on the compression stroke. The manual said to put your finger over the open spark plug hole of the first cylinder and feel for pressure as you turn the crank to the mark on the pulley. I had a pressure guage so I used that. It's pretty obvious when there is and isn't pressure.

Then install the distributor with the cap pointed to the #1 cylinder, or the upper left hand spark plug wire port.

if it starts and then dies instantly... I doubt your dizzy is 180* out.... sounds more like u forgot to reconnect the afm, or have a rather large vacuum leak.....
