Power window issues

So, I'm driving an 89 4Runner and my front windows all of a sudden just stopped working. I know it's the relay that's the problem, because I'm not getting any power to the switch and I've checked all of the fuses. I also rebuilt the switch and cleaned all of the connections inside.

What I'm curious about is can I just bypass the relay with power directly from the battery? I know a relay is supposed to control power from a higher power source to a something that uses less power, but I'm wondering if the difference in power between the battery and the power window motor is such that I could bypass the relay and not fry the motor.

Any help on this issue would be great, thanks.

Usually, a relay is used to close a circuit with a lot of current, instead of running that current through the switch. The most well known is a starter relay. If it wasn't for the starter relay, you would have that huge 2 or 4 gauge wire running up to your ignition, and then to the starter.

I realize a window motor doesn't pull anywhere near as much current as a starter, but my guess is that the switches aren't made for it. It might work for a short while, but the switch will likely burn out much quicker than it should.

Just replace the relay, it's there for good reason.

i just had a similar problem. turned out the harness plug right next to the kick panel fuse box had come loose. popped it back in and all the windows work perfectly again.
