Smile Power Steering Fluid Resevoir O-Ring Photo

Well, I broke down and finally replaced that leaking old o-ring. I had bought the whole rebuild kit. But, thanks to YT I decided to forego the total rebuild for now. My power steering works fine. The darn pump has just been leaking all over the place for a while. So, I sucked the fluid out of the resevoir, disconnected everything, and removed the pump. It was a nasty job cleaning off all the grime. I removed the tank and the o-ring. I thought you all might appreciate what a new o-ring looks like next to a leaky old one. So, here they are . .

I put everything back together and let it run for a while. No leaking so far. Let's hope for the best! Thanks again YT . . . I couldn't do all this stuff without all of you. If I recall correctly I owe a special thanks to Mt Goat.

There are several O-rings on the pump that need to be replaced besides the one you show...mine was leaking several places and once I replaced the "non-reusable" O-rings, no more leaks.

The thing about it is that they all look the same, new and old, so if you take the pump out, replace them all while you are at it.

Oops, that's right . . . . the Wabbit helped out too! Thanks!

I only saw two o-rings that are "external". The pressure port union o-ring and the resevoir o-ring. The rest are in the guts of the pump. I was trying to avoid tearing the pump completely apart. Here's the schematic I'm relying on

Thanks again! (Doesn't that o-ring on the right look all skinny and emaciated next to that plump, healthy o-ring on the left?)

Yeah, those two are the most common culprits...I learned that lesson the cost of a new pump...instead of some O-rings, but at least I could take back the core...so now I know I have a new pump and fresh O-rings all around...just waiting to take my core back after I finish my hydro assist...as my drilled out restrictor plate is in the "old" pump until I add the ram...but I digress.

I got fab work to do....
