Post 3.4 swap Auto tranny - I want it better
I have an '89 4Runner with the A340H and I'm 2 years post swap now - 261K on tranny. I've spent time and effort to get the tranny to shift decently, but there are some things I'm looking to improve. Early on post swap, I get the lurch from 1st to 2nd, which I've got to the point of bearable by lowering the line pressure. The things that really bug me are: The shift into reverse - pause, pause, pause, shift (then the metal clank). When the wife drives her, she frequently forgets the long reverse shift pause and hits the gas - then you get the Bam! The second annoyance is cruising at highway speed - any hill at all and the TC will unlock. I think this is an ECM issue, and not sure if anything can be done about it. But, it creates fatigue and I tend to put down some highway miles with this rig. I'd use the cruise control more if I can get this under control.
Bits of info I thought worth putting in here: From my search, a 3.4 has torque converter stall of about 2000. The 3.0's TC has a stall of 2800. In a limited search, I've found a 2000 stall TC for the a340. I haven't done much more than see it, but was wondering when I have to eventually do a rebuild - has anyone else put a lower stall TC in? I'm thinking that would help in lowering the heat, but I'm not sure how the driveability would differ.
When the swap was done, there was a some minor tranny work done. Neutral safety switch and shift solenoid replaced. The fluid looks great. No burning or slipping. It just keeps plugging away.
TransGo has shift improvement kits for the A340H. I see 2 actually. One is supposed to help fix inherent design problems, and the other is a performance upgrade. I'm just now looking into those reviews, but if someone has an opinion, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks for any and all advice!

I cannot speak to the efficacy of the transGo mods on these Toyota trannies, but I have used their mods on Ford/Mazda trannies that I have built and
I have been very pleased with the results. The TransGo kits did exactly what they promised. Worked good and lasted a long time.
I wouldn't hesitate to install them.

So, I've been under the weather. I haven't had a chance to run tests and post results. I'll do so when I get some garage time. Thanks again to those who replied.
