I usually use Royal Purple 10w-30 in my 87 4runner (22RE 5spd). About a month ago I spaced out and used 5w-30 Royal Purple when I changed the oil. Afterwards I noticed idle issues. After startup, the engine would stall unless I'd give it gas and keep the idle up. I'd basically have to rev it up a hair between stops just to keep it running. After about 10 minutes it'd be warmed up enough to idle on it's own and not need the extra gas. I lived with this since I figured it was because of the 5w-30.

I finally got tired of these shenanigans and changed the oil last week with 10w-30, hoping the problem would go away. Well, now it hasn't and I'm getting irritated.

What steps should I go thru to figure out what's causing this? Any help is appreciated.

think back on your last oil change and look to see if you knocked any wires loose while doing the oil change process.

things like did you pull your air filter to check it, where did you lay your tools in the engine bay, did you drop anything and have to get any of the tools inside the engine bay etc etc not just the normal stick my hands in there and remove the oil filter kinda thing. unless of course that's all you did.

I dont understand how changing oil viscosity would have any effect on idle quality.There is no oil thickness sensor to tell the ecm the difference.Sounds like you have a vac leak.

Haha, good advice actually. I didn't leave or drop any tools, but I did notice something while checking the air filter. Thanks for the simple, yet helpful tip!

I didn't understand how that would affect it either but after doing some searching it seems several people have experienced idle issues after changing oil viscosity. I don't understand it, but that's just what i figured it was originally...but I think you're on to something with the vac leak

You changing your oil to a different weight did not cause your idle problems. Something else is going on there...more info is needed!

Looks like I tweaked my intake hose while changing the filter in the airbox.

Where is the best place to find a replacement? I'd rather not overpay at the stealership...

*edit: nevermind, surprisingly Autozone carries it...this should fix my problem right? makes sense to me.

I'd be willing to bet that that big hole is what is causing you problem because the AFM is not measuring the right amount of air into the motor.

I was going to say make sure your oil cap is sealing, but YEP, that would do it! LOL~

ut oh not this again. You mean the motor runs weird with the oil cap removed?

Oh boy, did I open up a can of worms?...

The part's not available for now so I had to order it. Luckily I found some leftover multi-purpose, reinforced, polyethylene pressure sensitive tape with a soft and flexible shell and pressure sensitive adhesive in the toolbox...and what do you know, the idle is great again. Thank god for duct tape!
