Pinion Nut - Toyota Can't find the right one
1989 4runner, 22re, manual, 4 cyl rear 4.11 rear end.
Part number should be 90179-20001 which is a M20 x 1.5mm coarse thread.
I've had Toyota order three of these suckers and they're all the same, but a hair too small inner diameter for the pinion on my truck. The threads of the pinion try to thread into the inner taper which is the right size, but can't get into the threads which are too small.
Tried 90179-18001, but that's an M18 x 1.5mm which was too small.
Tried 90179-22016, but that's an M22 x 1.5mm which was too big and went right over the threads of the pinion.
Tried a random M22 that looked right, but again was too big.
Can't find a M21 x 1.5mm pinion nut from Toyota let alone a M21 from anywhere to see if that's even the right size.
Is there something I'm missing? What's the magic pinion nut / companion flange nut for the most generic fricken 4runner out there?

The 90179-20001 is a staked nut and should be correct, but just too small for some reason. Toyota originally though it was mislabeled, so they ordered two more and they're all the same, but not right for my application.

Yep, the nut that came off was 30mm and all of the ones we tried out the dealership were 30mm outer diameter.
Everything else on the truck has been original, but I don't know the full history. The visible bearing behind the pinion seal looked great, so maybe it has been replaced with something.
I assume a part # off the housing won't do much good if the R&P have been replaced at some time?

Here's all 3. The middle one is what should be the correct part, 90179-20001. Far left is for a newer truck and far right is the one that ce off the truck.
90179-20001 has a .33 inner diameter smaller than the one that came off the truck. This is enough that I can't get it to thread at all.
Also notice the one that came off the truck has a square shoulder where as the new one tapers.
I can't move the dang truck until I get the right nut for the pinion.

The 90179-20001 is the correct part number for the pinion, assuming noone has replaced your ring and pinion. The pinion has a slight taper to it, but the nut will go on.

After looking again at your old pinion nut, I bet your R&P is aftermarket. It's going to be hard to figure out who makes that nut.
I would call JT at JustDifferentials and talk to him about your problem. He may have what your looking for.

Looks like the same one that I got, but different than what came off. I'm worried now that it's some random pinion that one of the owners put on it.

Thanks for the help guys. JustDifferentials has been a huge help and although the nut that came off doesn't match any Toyota one they have, they do have something that may work. I'll cross my fingers and hope it does and if not, then I'll add it to the collection.
I really appreciate their help and quick responses, so if anyone needs driveline stuff there at the top of my recommendation list.

Looks like it's worse than just a pinion nut.
I'm assuming the pinion gear isn't supposed to leave such fine marks to th housing of the spider gears?

That ain't right! And it doesn't appear to be a 4cyl third, either! Look at images, the spider housing is all enclosed, 4cyl thirds are very much open...
Or..it could be...roll it about 90* of rotation, just two spiders in there? But its worn completely out, or was set up way wrong. Somebody was in there before you.

Hey looks just like mine that i pulled apart but way worse. The carrier looks to me like its correct but i am going to guess that someone put the wrong gear set in there. A really cheap alternative if it is the wrong pinion gear would be to buy a spool and put it in, that is assuming you can find a new nut. Im sure with the pinion set that deep into the ring your mesh pattern looks alright. I bought my nut, install kit, and spool from trail gear and it worked good.

Thanks guys. I took the entire thing into a local shop and he got me fixed up by cleaning up the pinion threads, chasing them, and getting it all set right.
If you're in Southern California, I'd highly recommend Performance Plus in Escondido. They used to be called North County Gear.
Now to get it back in and see what breaks next.
