Pinging
 

I just replaced the timing chain and this truck is pinging with regular gas. I set the timing right, with the diagnostic port shorted, and I get pinging. I retarded the timing to around 4 degrees and it still pings. If I use 89 octane, problem solved. Any input??

Spark plug gaps, first geuss. There may also be an octane selector on your engine. It's another way to adjust timing. Though, I don't know what might be goin on there, just thought I'd mention it. I'm assuming there's no problems with how you installed the chain, if you even did it yourself, if not then whomever.

Did you check the timing before you tore it apart? It was probably more retarded before.

my truck does that too, I think now after trying everything that its timing chain on wrong tooth or piston slap/something bent or broken. But now that Ithink about it ,the noise started after I swaped distributer. its on the wrong tooth ? did you take out yours too?

it is really hard to mess up a timing chain install with the birght chain links aligned. The gear are only goingto go on one way. So, i don't think that is the problem. I ran some seafoam through the intake and nothing changed. I was thinking that a old fuel filter might be resticting fuel and that might cause a lean mixture. I am going to run some injector cleaner throught the engine and look into the fuel filter. May be some new plugs also.

I would double check the distributor; see if you got it off a tooth.
