*PICS* Why isn't my 4runner starting???

I just bought this 4runner for $500 and need to get it running...it clicks when i turn the key but doesn't turn over. Also the box that my friend is pointing to (hahaha) gets REALLY hot...what is it and what does that mean? Does anyone know where the syllanoid is on this year and how to bypass it? sorry for all the questions!

Here is what I'd check out first - discharged/bad battery, a bad ground, possibly a bad ignition switch, or a bad starter more or less in that order.

The box your friend is pointing to is the resistors for the fuel injectors. I am sure they will get pretty warm during normal operation. If they are getting really hot I would start looking for a short in the fuel injection system.

mine did this once and it wouldn't turn over it would just click, finally after checking everything twice I banged on the starter housing and it turned right over, the starter got hung up.

yeah I still need to do them on mine, but it hasn't given me any trouble since the one time it did it before and it only happened because I was doing a compression test and it was cranking for longer than it usually does.

My ignition switch isn't in, I can turn it with a screwdriver though. That's the only drawback on getting this because it didn't come with keys. Would that not work with the screwdriver though? And also, how hot should that metal box get? It was too hot to hold your finger on..
