Overdrive Off ?

OK I have a 1995 4runner 3.0 4x4. My question is, how high can you go with the rpm with the over drive off ? You no, the rig will not shift before it reaches the right temp. So I don't want to push it not knowing what the rpm's should be. Thanks for the help.........

with your engine not being warm, you don't want to push the RPMS too high. I would start up your truck like a minute or two earlier and then take off. I would just avoid going above 3 to 3500 with the auto until your engine is properly warmed up. It doesn't take that long anyway, mine gets warm within 1 minutes warm up and 2 miles.

Well if you live where the temp doesn't get above 0 some days and the interstate is only a mile from your house, you don't have a lot options for keeping the revs down if you want to keep up with traffic on the interstate. I would get up to around 4000 but that would be my max. But I try to keep under 4000 all the time. Still takes awhile for it to shift when it is that cold.

Well, mornings here are normally around 50 so I can't say what I would do in that situation. Maybe just let it warm up longer? People get up in the 5000s all the time with their 3.0s. I KNOW I wouldn't ever go that high, especially when its cold. Mine has never been above 4 and that was due to a weird downshift.

The highest I have been was 5600. I have 35" tires with stock gears, so I am constantly pushing the 3.0 a little past 4000.

Kyle95sr5 Jun 4, 2007 08:01 PM

i guess im just underestimating my 3.0

kpaxfaq Jun 4, 2007 08:05 PM

I go over 5,000 rpm's daily....

Kyle95sr5 Jun 4, 2007 08:07 PM

maybe i just need to experience the upper rpm range a little more

agreed. you can push it farther for sure. i don't like to take it too hard, but when i feel like it that little sucker outperforms all of my expectations.

I totally agree, the 3.0 LOVES to go over 5,000rpm.
I usually don't make a habit of doing it all the time, but if I am in a fiesty mood I will take her up to 5,500 rpm on 1st - 3rd, she defently has some power if you give'r :)
I love when some douche is trying to show off and I open the ol girl up, surprizes most people :D

someone ran their jeep in to a pond for this very reason.... Don't they know only toyota's should play off road.

Anyway, most people don't give the 3.0 its due it's a toyota motor and besides the lack of power pushing a large truck and the HG problem the motor provides impressive power for what it is. It loves the high RPM range for power unfortunatly most people need it down low. I wouldn't make a habit about taking it over 5 grand, but you can.

For the first year that I drove this truck I never took it over 3,000rpm.
Thats when I really felt the truck was a DOG.
I started to take it up to around 4000 then finally took it up to 6,200rpm (never again, that scared the crap outa me)
I usually keep it under 4 but like I said, somtimes I will open it up :D

muahah, stupid heeps :D

6k RPMS? I didn't even think the 3vz-e would go that high!

Speaking of... does anyone know the fuel injection shut off rpm? I mean, doesn't a fuel injected engine stop supplying fuel if the engine revs too high? Anyone know what that point is for the 3vz-e? :rockin:

Why not walk outside 5 minutes before time to leave and crank it up and go back in the house?

Oh she does!
Im sure she can go higher but I refused to go that high (or higher) ever again.
I don't feel like blowing a hole in the block or somthing! :con:

usually temps around 32 f or 0 c or lower will give you the shifting problems. let the rig warm up in the drive way for a couple minutes and maybe take the long way around the block before hitting the highway.

in the cold nasty weather you leave a little early any way, just in case! not sure of the weather you have in your neck of the woods, not too much different than what i exprience and taking the extra time and distance should help out.

I believe the rev-limiter is set at 6250 or 6500 RPM. I think it cuts spark but I'm not certain.

Mine just seems to run out of breath (at least up here at altitude) above 5200 so I usually shift right around there.

3k RPM? LOL - mine'll barely move down there. I rev mine. Guess that's why I fall on the "c'mon, it ain't THAT slow" on the "just how 3.Slow is it?" threads.
