Overdrive?

I have a 1995 4runner,(6 cylinders, 3.0, automatic) and my truck started having problems with shifting to overdrive. Can anyone help?

Hows your transmission fluid? Has it been changed regularly?

When does the problem occur? When the engine/transmission are cold? warm? Both?

Does it have hard shifts in any of the other gears?

Have you turned your O/D off recently? did you turn it back on?

Barker87 03-26-2007 07:39 PM

Its fresh I changed it last month and the filter. It occurs more whenits cold but it will sometimes do it when its hot(rare) this just started last week. All the other gears are fine. I tried turning the O/D off then back on, just to see if maybe the switch was messed up. Do you have any ideas?

What size tires and gears are you running?

ChickenLover 03-26-2007 07:47 PM

It is normal for O/D to be locked out when the engine is cold. Did you recently change to a different thermostat?

Tires are 35s and the gears are just stock I havent messed with them, I actually dont have my thermostat in right now, because I wrecked my truck got it worked on and fixed and I was having problems and that was one of the things we thought was wrong so we took it out(it was the problem) and I havent had time to put it back in. Does that actually effect the ovedrive?

I have 33's and 4.88's and I don't hold overdrive very well, so I think that is your problem. What were the stock size tires for your truck? I don't know if I would ever make it to overdrive with my stock gears!

Yes. Your engine is over cooling. Until it reaches normal operating temp, it will not shift into o/d.

Barker87 03-26-2007 08:04 PM

Well I havent changed my tires or gears since Ive had the truck and it was perfect before the wreck, so I'm not sure if that would be the problem. Ill put the thermostat in tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks for your help guys. What would the stock gears be anyway.

Thermostat X2
best bet is to get the OEM thermostat, some of the aftermarket version wont work right.

i have a torque converter lockup issue that is intermediate. (it wont lock up on OD)

Its nice in that the motor finnaly runs in the sweetspot RMP range, but damn its nothing but a heat generator and pegs my trans temp with in 30 min or so.
