over heats with ten mintes twice then is fine????

i have a 86 runner 22re fuel injected.... i just replace thermostat and did a coolant flush and every time i start my car from a cold start and start driving it will over heat, (then i stop and let it cool down) then i will be off again, and i will come close again. Usually after that its fine, my temp guage varies but stay good the rest of the time... i talked to a few toyota techs that said they dont think is the head gasket going.. any ideas?

did you purge the cooling system of all air after replacing the thermostat?
Use OEM t-stat? try replacing it with an OEM dual stage or try drilling a small (1/16 or so) hole in the t-stat.

I have an 87 22re and it was doing the same thing. I flushed it,t-stat and about everything else. Finally I took it to a radiator shop and they were able to flush it with high pressure and it looked like mud coming out. These radiators are old and have alot of build up in them.

Just cause you got a new thermostat doesn't mean you got a good thermostat. I'd start by getting another thermostat. They are cheap. I've had the same problem with new thermostats.

Try a new thermostat for sure. Parts stores also tend to hand out thermostats for the wrong temp.

replace the thermo..

My truck was doing the same thing. I had a fresh rebuild and it kept overheating. Until I could find a Toyota two stage thermo I just drilled a small hole opposite the valve side on the parts store thermostat. It worked and my truck stopped overheating. Later I got a two stage and installed it and it works and no overheating. I've been driving it like this for over four years and the temo gauge never budges from it's normal LOW spot. I really think that this common thermostat problem is the key issue with so many 22R/E headgasket problems.

Fan clutch is a very simple and relatively cheap fix if the thermostat doesn't work out.
