Ive got an 86 4x4 22rte pickup. Manual tranny

I just bought it a month ago and am halfway through painting it as BC and bare metal dont get along as well as Arizona and bare metal. lol

It currently has old stock sized tires on it. I am planning on taking the new ones of my dodge and putting them on the yota. 31x10.5 about 3" taller than stock tires.

I believe the trucks that came from the factory with 31's had 4.56 gears while mine has 4.10's

Should I regear? the rear diff is making noise so I will need to deal with that. Should I just throw new 4.10's in or change the front and the rear to 4.56?

Im not a serious wheeler, mostly interested in better fuel economy. Im thinking that the extra grunt the turbo gives will help turning the tires but will it be enough?

I've read lots about this and from what i've read it looks like the 4.56's help especially with the non turbo....but most of what I read guys arent interested in mpg's as much as theyre interested in the grunt to turn 33's lol

87hillbillyoter (22r/e?) runs 33's and stock gears. he said it's a little tuff to get going in 4-hi. i've read that 4:56's and 31's is a good combination, and is close to stock.

I have read those threads and I do understand the physics of changing tire sizes and gear ratios.

What im looking for, is what people have experienced regarding mpg. And I'm also hoping that someone may chime in with some experience regarding the 22rte

Im basically wondering if the 4.56's will help the mpg's or hinder. Considering that the taller tires will drop the rpms, but the engine will have to work harder...OR maybe there isnt much difference at all with this engine/tire/gearing combo and I should save the 500$ and leave the front alone

i haven't heard anything about that specific combo, and 22ret info is hard to come by

Do you do more highway driving or city? The 4.10's will get better mpg's on the highway, and probably shouldn't do half bad in the city either. 4.56 would help you get moving in the city. I've been running 31's on 4.10's for two years now, yeah it takes a bit more effort getting started in 4-hi or on hills, but nothing unreasonable. I also have a 22r so you've got a pretty good power gain over me, I don't see you having any problems with 4.10's. I get 17-19 mpg (usually about half city/half highway driving) and when I go long distance on the highway i get usually about 21 mpg. With your motor, it would probably be a bit better (as long as you don't spool up the turbo too much ). My guess is that 4.56's would bring your mileage down a bit.

my truck non turbo was right at home with 31's speedo will read off by a little but with 4.10's it wasnt bad at all. more comfortable rpm at interstate speeds in fact. 32 is like the magic number for my truck where it really starts to feel like a dog. my 33's make it pathetic.

i got a 22rte with 4:10s on 35s, im gonna regear to 4:56, Ive been running the 4:10s with 35s for like 2years lol i think 4:10s are fine for 33's and then you will not have to regear the front and save $$$

Im kind of wondering why you would want 4:56 gears and 35" tires? why not 5.29's?

ya know...theres is a happy medium of 4.30 gears.

i think with the turbo you'll not be happy with the 4.56's...but the 4.30's will give you a little more pep than 4.10's..and better gas mileage than 4.56's.


4.30's come factory..but i'm not sure what vehicle combinations they came in.

i think 4.30's come from 2nd gen runners and 3rd gen trucks withh a 22re and auto tranny, someone correct me if im wrong. but going from a 4.10 to a 4.30 just seems down right silly IMHO. you should be great with your stock gears and 4.10's, also, alot depends on if you have a manual or auto tranny??

my theory is that 31's aren't a huge loss of power, and 4.30's aren't a huge gain, so they'll even out

Going from 4.10s to 4.30s seems like a lot of trouble and expense for a 4.7% improvement in gear ratio.

Going to 4.56s gives you a 10.1% improvement. And well 5.29s give you 22.5% change in gearing, and that might be a bit much for what you're trying to accomplish.

Your 22ret makes a little more power then what the rest of us have to play with. As Placarded my truck has a B03A axle code which should be 4.10s. I have a slightly moddified 22re and have no problem powering down the highway on 31s.

When I first bought my runner it was an automatic. Completely gutless with 31's and didn't get better than 16mpg. I swapped in the manual and I have tons more power and can get close to 20mpg city driving. I run 4:10's and it works great other than first gear. I need to find a turbo tranny with the lower first gear and I think my 4:10's and 31's would be perfect. Definitely not a highway cruiser by any means though. I can cruise 65-70 mph just fine, but any higher speeds than that and the motor starts sucking fuel because it's starting to boost.

you're right. i just looked at a tire comparison chart, and going from stock to 31's is a -8.7% drop, and, according to the above info, works out to +1.4% difference from stock (with 4.56's)

I would err on the 4:30 side myself.

To be honest I believe there is no happy median with gears.

You either have low, which pulls better but has higher operating revs.

Or lower which pulls slightly worse, but has lower operating revs.

You already have a Turbo, so you have more power...

And you have, or should have a R151 trans which has a lower 1st gear...

So I'd say stock or 4:30's and you'll be fine. More so if you've got or get Aluminum rims.

yes its the r151f. And ive got tacoma wheels so i think im going to stay with the 4.10's

R150/1 Fifth gear: 0.838:1

(Supra) R154 Fifth gear: 0.753:1
