oil pan gasket woes
so, I bought a cork gasket and tube of ultra grey for my oil pan (86 4wd pickup, 22re)
after removing the pan and scraping off the old leaky grey remnants, I put a bead of the grey around the pan in the pattern suggested by the FSM. Immediately after which, I pressed the cork gasket onto the pan rim on top of the RTV. I got the pan back in place and bolted it up according to FSM torque specs, raised the front dif, remounted enginge mounts, attached steering damper and idler arm....phew!....and suddenly realized: I didn't put a layer of RTV on TOP of the cork gasket....
SO....should I:
reverse operation, back out the pan, smear some RTV on top of the cork? start from scratch, scrap the whole cork and go with pure RTV?
OR, just leave it the way it is...Block/Cork/RTV/Pan?

Should not use a gasket. You should get the Toyota black FIPG and use that. if done correctly it will never leak But you only have 10 minutes to finish the job otherwise you must start over.

I had the same thing happen to me. I figured there would be a gasket so i ordered the oil pan gaskets from CAP. came with two cork gaskets once i put it back together i noticed that the oil pan bolts were too short to allow the gaskets.And if you look on the parts diagram for your engine, there isnt a gasket. I used something similar to the toyota black FIPG that was cheaper but exact same stuff. I got it from autozone for around 6 bucks.

If I have the transmission and flywheel removed can you get the oil pan out without dropping the diff? just wondering because I am replacing the transmission and need to fix the oil pan leak as well. This on on my 1990 22re 5sp.

Silicone and gaskets do not go together. The Ultra Grey will be just fine, it's all I use at work. BUT Silicone is a gasket on its own. Adding another gasket to the mix is asking for a leak.

Just use one or the other, not both. I used a cork one with some of that black Permatex gasket sealer and it doesn't leak a drop. The FIPG may be better I just hate scraping it off.

Next time search or post in the newbe section. You did it wrong, but unless it leaks (it probably will) spend your time on something fun.

had I started my own thread you or someone else would have told me I should have searched......catch 22. My question still pertains to the oil pan gasket. If you don't know the answer to my question just don't reply to it. Just because I'm a newb on this particular forum doesn't mean I am a newb in general. If you read the other posts in this thread there is reference to dropping the diff. that is what sparked my question. FYI, my post count is probably low because I can usually figure ˟˟˟˟ out by myself and don't need to ask many questions and I don't just reply to people telling them to use the search just to jack up my post count. /Break/

As I tried to explained, hijacking someone else's thread is confusing. That is why you have not gotten a good answer yet. I was recommending the newbe tech section for the OP because we are not expected to search before we post there. Otherwise I thought you had a good question.
You will need to drop the pumpkin down, but you do not have to remove it. Just disconnect the three the mounts.
Do not use a cork gasket follow the directions in the FSM.
