Hey guys just picked this truck up over weekend. It's an 86 with a 22r. Body is in good shape and the frame is surprisingly clean. The guy before me changed the valves before I bought it. I included a pick of the bad valve, what in the world caused that? It's got a nice oil leak coming from the front crank seal and timing cover but that's about it for problems. Are 22r's generally gutless? I have 31x10.5's on this thing and it's a real slug........suppose a compression check is in order. Man that thing's beautiful! I've never had/driven a 22re, but assuming you have stock gearing, I would imagine it wouldn't be a hot rod, especially with 31's. From what I've read on here the 22re is more known for its bulletproof-ness more than power. Great looking truck though!

Very nice looking truck. As far as the 22r goes, there is a lot you can do to bring it back to life. All depends on what you are willing to do to it.

Nice graphics got to love the 80's. Not sure but the valve looks like it burnt from running too lean. I would get the fuel system checked out.

do you mind elaborating a little? i own an 88 4runner with a 22re but this is definitely my first experience with carbs......anything cheap i can do to help? rebuild the carb? general tuneup?

Check out the FAQ on the board. Also Google carb rebuild, tons of links from Pirate, TTORA, and so on regarding carb rebuilds. If you have any mechanical experience then the carb o/h is easy. If you are not familiar with carbs then it may be best to have it rebuilt by a shop. :D

thanks for the advice. yeah i plan on doing the carb i don't think it could possibly be that difficult.....i've had all kinds of weird stuff taken apart and somehow always managed to get it back together, so this should be fun:laugh:

I had an 87 long box with a 22r on 31s... never found it to be gutless... even when loaded with several reels of cable and a ladder rack...
I had a free flow cat and larger exhaust on it and a K&N drop in filter other than that it was stock...
It was no tire smoker but it was fine around town and would do 75 on the hwy up/down hill all day long... I was putting 1500kms a week on it for almost a yr with no service other than oil changes/lub... once a month lol...

My guess is he never adjusted the valve lash. One hung open and started to burn

These motors are not that expensive to work on. It just really depends on what you are willing to do and what you are willing to spend. I have never had a a carbed 22r, but my 22re with 35s will smoke my stock 2000 ranger. I rebuilt the motor bored .30 with a new head and 261 cam from ted at EB. I do have 4:56 gears and if I put 4:88 or 5:29 it would be much quicker. I have heard that weber carbs are a good upgrade if tunned correctly. There are plenty of threads on here about upgrades and cheap tricks. Sorry I can't help to much on the carb

looks like my truck only mine has a flaky red/brown paint job haha. I run 33s and its not the fastest thing around but i wouldnt say sluggish.
