not engaging 4 low

Im new to 4x4s and i went out yesterday(day i got it) to test everything and its capabilities...and i liked what it could do(everything was 4 high and my clutch hated me) but befor that i couldnt engage 4 low... it just feels as if its in neutral... and the truck doesnt go anywhere...i took the center console off and still nothing... back to 2wheel and on the road home... what are the possible issues? F'd transfer case? linkage???

'86 runner 5spd 22re

Thanks ahead for your help...(e button is broke...)

Sometimes it helps to jiggle it a little. Try rolling slowly on a hill while shifting into 4wd while in neutral.

i had a 90 pickup 22re, similar in driveline i suppose, but that thing was a bitch to get in and out of 4wd. def. try rolling down a hill, going in reverse, but the thing that always did the trick for me was rolling slowly down a slight hill in reverse or just backing up in reverse then shifting to neutral and pushing/pulling like hell. it will go in. our truck was the same. it would not shift sitting still. not even to 4 high. just try this stuff, you will get it eventually.
