Well, My head gasket blew about a week and a half ago, so I decided to tear down the engine. Got the heads off today and boy oh boy did I have an (un)pleasant suprise...

I'm sure this is not the worst that most of you have seen on a 3VZ-E, but it is certainly the worst looking block I've torn down. I haven't taken the oil pan off yet though.

Plugs were changed every 6,000 miles... It burned oil pretty bad. Thats prob the reason for all the carbon buildup

Awww. So you were pushing it to see how far it can go? LOL. I would have saw ugly looking plugs, and been like, "Time to change the head gasket, or valve seals... or... "

I noticed on here a lot of people run there stuff into the ground before maintenance. Is this pretty common of Toyota owners?

Yep - I was pushing it... I wanted to at least replace the valve guide seals, when I pulled the plugs a few months ago, but money was an issue - cash is still an issue - but now I get to rebuild the turd
Its all cool though. I used to work for a performance shop, so I've got some connections to some machine shops in the area. I've also been considering Oregon Engine Rebuilder's "Super Stock" longblock. Considering it's going to run me about that much to have the machining done here, plus the cost of pistons/rods/rings/etc... Opinions?

Lol - yeah it was spark knock. Advance the timing anything more than 2 degrees BTDC and it would ping it's a** off. Come to find out I read that retarding the timing causes the engine to run hotter.

So does anyone have any experience with Oregon Engines. I hear their 22RE units are pretty good, but I haven't read much about their 3VZE. I thought about just putting rebuilt heads on my bottom end, but with that chip in the piston (last pic) - I'm not so sure I want to do that anymore.

I think this is common with just about everybody. I've seen just about every common make and model of vehicle rode completely into the ground. I am good about keeping up on maintenance, but even I have ran a couple of motors clear up until catastrophic failure.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that all of my vehicles are close to dying when I get them.

Wow and I thought I had bad carbon buildup you might want to check your intake if your pistons were that bad god knows how caked up the intake is with carbon.

Yeah - the intake is pretty bad. Everything is going to need a good hot tank before it goes back together.

I'll shoot Sunwest Automotive an email and see if I can get a full quote with shipping/cores/etc. I'm assuming that most engine remanufacturers use Toyota head gaskets?

it's crazy to think that mess can hang onto the inside of the combustion chamber, mainly the top of the piston, when it's moving up and down around 50 times a second

that's a lot up build up man, geez, lol
